Japanese indie developer ENDLESS SUMMER Studio has escalated a dispute with crowdfunding platform Ubgoe into a criminal case, alleging that a platform withheld the entire ~$69,000 raised for their game—turning what should’ve been a funded project into a legal mess involving police and missing money.
The project for visual novel Purgatory: Blue, led by composer cittan* (Fumihisa Tanaka), successfully raised over 10.93 million yen (around $68,400) from 485 backers, reaching 156% of its original goal during its July–September 2025 campaign.
Despite this, the studio claims it has “yet to receive a single penny” more than five months after the scheduled payout date.
According to the developer, Ubgoe missed multiple promised payment deadlines. The funds were initially due in November 2025, then allegedly promised again for December 15, and later December 26 after a written repayment pledge was secured from CEO Kazuo Okada. None of these deadlines were met.
Even after further assurances in February 2026 that payment would finally be made, the money has still not been delivered.
Following this series of delays, ENDLESS SUMMER Studio hired legal representation and filed a criminal complaint with the Shibuya Police Station in February, accusing Okada of embezzlement. Authorities have reportedly begun investigating the case through a white-collar crime division.
The platform has reportedly faced other issues, including another creator claiming that over half of their project funds were withheld, and the Ubgoe website itself going offline in mid-April.
Despite the financial situation, cittan* has stated that the game will still be completed, even if it means continuing development using personal funds and alternative fundraising methods.
