Mangaka Forced To Apologize, Promises To Avoid “Controversial Themes”

A Japanese manga author has issued a public statement clarifying that their fictional work does not endorse real-life behavior after facing harassment, even apologizing and pledging to avoid certain themes in the future—because apparently, some people still need to be told that fiction is not reality.

A manga author known as 春泥 (Shundei) has released a statement addressing backlash tied to their work Ganbare! Nakamura-kun!!, after reportedly facing harassment that led them to withdraw from public activity.

The controversy centers around Episode 5 of the anime adaptation, which included a scene where a teacher and student exchange contact information. This depiction sparked criticism from some viewers, prompting the author to clarify their intentions.

The statement, shared via the official account for WEB comic site “HERO’S Web”, emphasizes that the scene was not meant to promote inappropriate behavior, but rather functioned as a subtle narrative element within the BL genre:

We have received a message from Shundei-sensei. Below is the content of the message.

“In Episode 5 of the TV anime “Ganbare! Nakamura-kun!!,” there is a scene where a teacher and student exchange personal contact information. However, this is merely suggestive expression within the context of BL and carries no meaning beyond that. Neither the author nor the anime production team endorses teachers and students exchanging personal contact information.

It was the author who requested that the distance between Otsugiri and Hirose not be brought too close, that they remain clearly in a teacher-student relationship, that depictions which sexually exploit female students or female characters be avoided, and that vulgar expressions present in the original work be toned down in the anime to make it accessible to a wider audience.

The production team respected and upheld these wishes.

Additionally, while the author has previously created works within the BL genre featuring large age-gap pairings and adult-minor relationships such as teacher-student dynamics, in light of the increasing number of tragic crimes involving adults and minors in recent years, they will no longer use such themes moving forward.

We ask for your understanding.

Furthermore, if anyone has already read the original work and felt uncomfortable, we sincerely apologize.”

The tweet acquired 11 million views in about 2 days.

This is yet another example of degenerates forcing creators into censorship over situations and concepts they don’t agree with, and this particularly instance is worse since the author confirmed that the exchange of personal information wasn’t meant to eventually lead into a personal relationship.

The mention of “vulgar expressions” being turned down in the anime to “appeal to a wider audience” is a double whammy, indicating that despite the series self-censoring content for the anime, it simply still wasn’t enough for the perpetually offended, making some wonder why they even bothered to censor the work in the first place.
