Applications are invited for the appointment of Post-doctoral Fellow in the Centre on Contemporary China and the World at the University of Hong Kong, to commence from September 1, 2026, for 1-year temporary basis, with the possibility of renewal, subject to satisfactory performance and funding availability.

Duties and Responsibilities

CCCW is seeking a highly analytical and rigorously trained researcher to conduct original research and other tasks listed below:

  • – work on projects in the fields of (1) studies of ASEAN countries, (2) Chinese political leadership and governance, or (3) AI methods for social science related to the Centre’s priorities
  • – revise the doctoral dissertation for publication, if applicable
  • – design/refine research methodologies
  • – coordinate data collection and analysis
  • – support the organization of events
  • – assist in the preparation of reports
  • – perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • – a Ph.D. degree in political science, international relations, economics, or a related discipline
  • – a demonstrated understanding of Chinese politics, economy, society, China-U.S. relations and broader international affairs, especially ASEAN countries, with record of publishing academic research papers
  • – knowledge of AI tools for social science research
  • – an excellent command of written and spoken English and Chinese
  • – good interpersonal, communication, organizational and problem-solving skills
  • – the ability to work independently and in a team
  • – self-motivated and responsible
  • – Successful candidates must be able to obtain the legal right to take up full-time employment and reside in Hong Kong during the Post-doctoral fellowship period. Visa and work authorization will be made possible for successful applicants through the Human Resources Office.

The appointment will commence from September 1, 2026, on a temporary basis for 1 year, with the possibility of renewal, subject to satisfactory performance and funding availability.

The Role

The appointee will provide a full spectrum of administrative, analytical and secretarial support to the Centre Director to ensure the Centre’s efficient and effective operation. This position requires a self-starter who anticipates needs, manages complex schedules, and navigates multilingual and multicultural contexts with professionalism. Prior experience in fast-paced environments will be an advantage.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Schedule and Communication Management
  • – Coordinate the Director’s calendar, including meetings, travel arrangements and Centre events.
  • – Prepare briefing materials to support meetings and engagements.
  1. Grant Programme Coordination
  • – Monitor grant timelines, deliverables and reporting requirements.
  • – Compile grant-related documentation, progress updates and compliance reports.
  • – Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to collect data and ensure timely submission of materials.
  1. Operational Support
  • – Provide secretarial support to meetings and assist the Director in overseeing office administration and other assigned duties.
  • – Assist in event operations, including venue booking, travel arrangements and on-site logistics.
  • – Support project planning and management, including activities related to grant and award applications, human resources and financial administration.
  • – Organize files, databases and records for easy access.

Qualifications and Qualities

  • – A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with at least 2 years of relevant work experience, preferably in finance and research project administration in tertiary institutions.
  • – Excellent command of both English and Chinese (including Mandarin), with proficiency in Cantonese highly desirable.
  • – Strong organizational, analytical and multitasking skills, with meticulous attention to detail.
  • – Cultural sensitivity and the ability to navigate social and political nuances across Chinese and Western contexts.
  • – Sound judgment and discretion in handling confidential matters.
  • – Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and perform effectively under pressure.
  • – A proactive, self-motivated team player with strong interpersonal, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • – Familiarity with grant management processes will be an advantage.

What We Offer

The appointment will be made on a fixed-term full-time contract for 2 years, to commence as soon as possible with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, together with contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme at 10% of basic salary. Other benefits include annual leave and medical benefits.
