The Lancer family started out together at the county fair. Murdoch reminded them for the second time to watch out for each other and stay together.  Teresa had her arm through his and his youngest gave him a smile and a nod as he grabbed his brother’s arm to drag him toward the stand selling beer.

With a beer in hand, Scott guided his brother to another stand.  “Johnny my boy, you’re going to love this.”  He bought two hot dogs and two bowls of beans.

“Beans?  On a hot day like this?”

“Give it try.”

Johnny watched skeptically as Scott put chopped onions on his hot dog.  “Do what I do,” he instructed.

Johnny put a small spoonful of onions on his dog and poked it a couple times.

Scott shook his head and took a big bite. “Oh,That’s good.” Chewing, his face had a look of bliss.

Johnny shook his head and took a small bite.  He followed his brother to one of the straw bales set under an oak tree.

“These remind me of the hot dogs I had at Coney Island.”

“Where’s that?”

“New York.  It’s become a popular resort area along the shore since the war.  I bought my first hot dog from a street vendor.”

“New York, huh?”

“I’ll show you on the map when we get home.”

Johnny got up and rubbed his hands together. “Let’s see if we can find some of those nefarious activities Murdoch warned us about.”

Hearing the clicking of the Big Six Wheel, Scott led his brother to where a crowd of men were gambling away their pay.

Johnny shook his head and pushed a stay lock of hair away from his sweaty forehead.  He finished his beer and snagged two more.  Handing one to his brother, he remarked. “Not a bad way to spend a hot summer afternoon.  Not bad at all.”
