Written for the Lancer Writer’s ’28 Days of Rain’ Challenge’
Nod to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards
Johnny and Barranca flinched at the sound of distant thunder. ‘It’s still a ways
off,’ he glanced with apprehension at the ominous dark cloud.
Another crack and a flash much closer. “Easy boy. It’s going to be alright,” he
soothed as Barranca sidled in fear.
The air felt heavy just before the sky lit up at the same time Johnny was almost
deafened by the crack of thunder. The ground shook as a tall oak tree toppled
after getting stuck.
Feeling like his breath was knocked out of him, he tried to calm Barranca as he
pranced in place, neck bowed as his instinct was to run. Johnny felt the same,
but needed to make sure nothing was on fire. As the tree branches settled into
the soft earth, he sure all was well.
The heavens opened up and the pair were away galloping towards home.
