This is one thing I miss about sprite games, the different sprites between versions

[deleted]

The character the colors. It was so cool to see your favorite mon in a different sprite

and in emerald they move

I miss old sprites in general. They had edge to them and felt more alive than current animations somehow.

Because the new sprites have no edges probably, they’re all smooth like someone forgot to shade them.

I always thought it was weird that teddiursa was the only non gen 1 mon to get a sprite update in FRLG.

I thought it was weird that they bothered giving new sprites to pokemon that you could never see in ruby and sapphire

Edited

I don't think it's that weird, honestly. They couldn't exactly just directly port over the Gen II sprites, and with the GameCube games and eventual release of FRLG you can obtain almost all Kanto and Johto Pokémon in RSE.

"Hey Look at this cool fucker"

Rhydon's FRLG sprite looks so badass.

RS sprites do show more personality but I've always preferred the FRLG due to how smooth they look, with the color and proportions on point.

FR/LG looks better but I like how more dynamic the poses were in RS

exactly! the newer ones are objectively better in terms of of pixel art quality and accuracy to the true design of the pokémon, but the older ones were just so much FUN

A coin pusher roguelite deckbuilder we’ve been working on. Wishlist now!

FRLG sprites always felt so good, and seeing them side by side they're much more iconic imo

Probably because you saw them more. Most of Gen 1 Pokemon aren't available in R/S.

Why is Wartortles colour so inconsistent

I distinctly remember RSE having some really weird looking Kanto/Johto sprites, like almost a sorta "uncanny" look to them, like they were just slightly off model enough or with a poorly done pose to look a bit strange.

Almost like they were fanmade sprites. A lot of them look almost amateurish.

they were probably going off of the models from Crystal which still used those old proportions before being redesigned for the generation III official art, a lot of gen II pokemon look identical to their sprites from crystal

I prefer the LFRG versions, but I RS Eevee looks better

Kingler’s RS sprite looks pretty cool, but once it’s in battle it looks like it’s holding itself up by its claw.

So what's the deal with Zapdos' wings? It has two pairs, one yellow and one black? Or the wings are... layered, and the top layer is smaller, maybe?

zapdos has always been like that, it's a little weird

Pokemon works so much better with sprite art.

3D elements are great and some things work really well but it just doesn't capture the charm of the old sprites.

i WANT to feel the same way, but there are so many 3D games that get it right!

look at BD/SP or S/V and compare it to something like the link’s awakening remake, or animal crossing new horizons — it’s obvious that 3D graphics are NOT what’s stopping gamefreak from bringing that charm to modern pokémon games.

we deserve games with vision behind the art direction, not rapid-fire undercooked titles whose only goal is to be passable enough to sell.

The Nidoran female in R/S looks so cute, I'm sad I didn't get to see a lot of the gen 1 sprites in that game.

Why is Sandshrew’s RS sprite the cutest thing ever

I remember being so excited to send pokemon from firered to sapphire that aren’t in hoenn just to see what they looked like

For the most part I like the RS sprites more. They seem to have more personality, like they are more alive. The FRLG sprites look like really nice drawings. I do like a few FRLG sprites better though. But I think I would choose the RS if I had to choose between them.

They did Gyarados dirty in R/S.

3D models killed dynamic posing & (ironically) forces lifeless T-posing

Look at those Scyther, Pidgeot, Marowak, Seel, & Haunter sprites.

You can feel their energy through the still image

Man, Wartortle has so much going on in the RS sprites

Additionally Wartortle, Mr. Mime, and Snorlax have different sprites in Emerald
