Yes. We Are. And your analysis is as always spot on. The depressing thing for students of history and IR like us is that we spent so many years decoding the rationality of the systems in the past, thinking that current politics must resemble that somehow… but no, we have simply gone mad and we are dressing it in some sort of rational-moralistic discourse. But the underlying operating system is exactly the kind of megalomaniac political psychosis you are describing. Which is why I think we need a global intellectual resistance (including from within the West) to do two things: A) Work on bringing our own societies back to a more sane approach over the long term. B) Help the Global South understand the level and motivations of our current insanity so the largest catastrophes can be avoided in the medium term. We are a bunch of pretty unhinged nations at this point.
