A get-well story/card for a special lady, Melanie Maben

.

“You got a date?”

The voice startled Johnny.  He hadn’t heard Scott come into his room.  Turning, he gave his big brother one of those famous smiles and nodded.

“Yeah, you could say that.”

Johnny looked back into the mirror, reaching for his comb.

“Can I borrow some of that smelly stuff you put on when you’re stepping out?”

“Smelly stuff?”  Scott chuckled.  “She must be something special if you’re going to use some of my best cologne.”

Johnny caught Scott’s reflection in the mirror.

“She is special in a lot of ways.”   Turning, he looked directly at his brother.  “So, you gonna’ let me have some?”

Scott walked out of Johnny’s room and returned a few moments later with his best cologne.  Handing the bottle over, he watched as Johnny opened it, take a quick sniff, and pour a generous amount into his hand.

“Whoa, boy, go easy on that stuff.”

Johnny laughed as he splashed it on his face and neck.  Leaning forward, he asked, “So, how do I smell?”

Scott took a deep breath and shook his head.

“Well, you’ll definitely get her attention.”

“That’s the idea.”

Scott reached for the bottle and put the top back on.

“So, you going to tell me about this special lady?”

Johnny took one more look at himself in the mirror before turning to face his brother.

“Well, I’ll tell you she’s something, she’s a pretty little thing with blond hair and eyes that sparkle.  She’s got a smile that … well, that smile will take your breath away.”

“Where’d you meet her?”

“Around.”

Johnny didn’t want to go into detail with his brother as to where he’d met her.  He’d seen her in town one day and followed her down the boardwalk, unable to take his eyes off the lady.  When she turned around and saw him, he stopped and hurriedly turned away, pretending to look at something in a store window.   She waited a moment and then came back, staring at him until he was forced to look at her.

“Can I help you?”  Her voice had a soft, sweet quality to it.

Johnny took his hat off and peered into her eyes.

“No, ma’am… I mean, yes ma’am.  I mean…”

“I know who you are, Mr. Lancer.”

“You do?”

“I’ve seen you in town with your father and brother.”

“You have?”

“I’ve also read about you in one of those dime novels.”

Johnny was sure he’d paled.

“Don’t worry; I don’t believe everything I read.  So, Mr. Lancer, or do you prefer Madrid, what can I do for you?”

Johnny remembered smiling.

“Around?  That’s vague.  Are you afraid I’ll steal her away from you?

Johnny grinned.  “Nope, not a chance, she’s a Johnny girl.”

“A Johnny girl?  You don’t think she’d like me?”

“Oh, she’d like you alright, that’s what I’m afraid of, that she might like you more than me.”

“Alright, I’ll leave it alone.  So, are you going to tell me this special lady’s name?”

Johnny thought a moment.  No harm in telling Scott her name.  There was no chance she’d ever fall for his blond-headed brother.

“Yeah, her name is Melanie.  Melanie Maben. Pretty name, ain’t it?”

Johnny picked up his hat and gun belt and turned to the door.

“Got to go, Boston.  Don’t want to keep this lady waiting.”

Scott watched his little brother saunter out of the room.

Smiling, Scott headed for his room to change clothes. He’d give Johnny a bit of a head start and then follow. Who knows, maybe that special lady wouldn’t play favorites and could be persuaded to become a Scott girl.

Knowing his brother’s way with the ladies, he knew the chances were slim, but Scott was a firm believer that miracles do happen, and anything was possible.
