Written for the Lancer Writer’s ’28 Days of Rain’ Challenge’

A sequel to Stranded

Pulling away from the island, Scott’s arms protested as he hauled back on the oars. 

“Scott.”

“Yes, sir.”

“We need a bigger boat.”

Scott stopped rowing.  “You do know Barranca can swim.”

This time, it was Murdoch’s turn to laugh.

Four days later, a wooden raft slowly made its way across the flooded pasture.  Murdoch steered while Scott and Val paddled.

“That’s it, boys…put some muscle into it.  We’re almost there.”

“I can’t believe you talked me into this.” Val shook his head.  “So, why the raft?”

Scott grunted.  “Johnny wouldn’t leave Barranca.”

Val chuckled.  “You two do know that horse can swim.”

“That’s what I said.”

“There he is.  Johnny, son, we’re coming.”

“Well, if it was me,” Val pulled on his oar.  “I’d leave his ass out here.”

“I was tempted. Murdoch wouldn’t hear it.”

“Val.  Scott, less talk, more paddling.”

Val glowered. Scott laughed.
