Written for the Lancer Writer’s ’28 Days of Rain’ Challenge’
Scott walked into the Great room and stopped. Johnny was sitting at Murdoch’s desk, pen in hand. He’d look out the window, turn back to the desk, write something, stop to think, and then write some more.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m writing down every word I can think of to describe rain.”
“Why….?”
“It’s been raining for 28 days. I’m bored.”
“Me too.” Scott pulled up a chair. “Alright, so what have you got so far?”
Johnny cleared his throat. “Dew, misting, spitting, drizzle, pattering, shower, pouring, downpour, deluge, … torrent.
Scott nodded. “How about gully wash, raining pitchforks, raining cats and dogs…
“Good ones,” Johnny jotted them down. “What else?”
“Gusher, hammering, drumming, pounding…”
They stopped and looked at each other.
“Well,” Scott sighed, “that was fun.”
“Yeah, we killed a good ten minutes. Now what do you want to do?”
“Drink?”
“Sure, why not.” Johnny tossed the pen down and started for the drink cart. “Then we can finish the ark.”
