Amanohashidate, Kyoto
One of Japan's three most scenic views — and so much more than a view.
About two and a half hours from Kyoto or Osaka by train. Amanohashidate is one of Japan’s three most scenic views, and one of the most-loved destinations among Japanese travelers.
Most people picture Kyoto as a city of temples, but this part is completely different. The pace is slower, the air smells like the sea, and everything feels local and unhurried. Honestly, it’s one of the best places in Japan to just slow down.
One thing though: book a sightseeing train before you go. It takes the whole trip up a level.
This guide covers 5 must-see spots, 3 experiences, 5 restaurants, 3 places to stay. There’s also a Google My Map at the end with everything pinned in one place.
Must-see
The five spots you really shouldn’t miss.
A 3.6km pine-covered sandbar stretching across Miyazu Bay. You can walk it in about 50 minutes, but renting a bike gets you across in 20. The light filtering through the pines, the sea on both sides.
Being in the middle of it feels completely different from looking down at it from above. Rental bikes are available near the station.
The observation deck on the south side of the sandbar. You can get up by chairlift, cycle car, or monorail. The cycle car, where you pedal your way up the hill, is the most popular. From the observation promenade, you get a full view of Miyazu Bay and the pine-covered sandbar.
The chairlift ride back down is especially nice. Slowly descending with the sea and sky spread out in front of you. It’s one of those moments you won’t forget.
One of Japan’s three great Monju temples, known for bringing wisdom and academic success.
