Lying about being a marine

National guardsman here, found out my soldier has been lying about previously being a Marine, also going to ranger school. We checked his IPERMS and he has no documents to support it and it says in his Army enlistment contract that he had no prior military service.

As a national guardsman I'm not sure how severe this is. He's alway been a great soldier to me. To his credit he never wore any tabs or patches, just claimed it. We plan on not recommending him for any leadership roles, awards, and a sit down. I realize this is bad, but I'd like the opinion of fellow service members on how to handle this, am I being too light?

Maybe it’s because Marines do not use IPERMS.

Maybe it’s because his Guard recruiter didn’t include his prior service.

I have a prior service Marine in my unit with the exact same story but he brought me the DD214 and I added it to his records.

Tell him you need to fix his DA 5016/RPAM so he gets credit for those years and you need his DD214 from Marines.

Your S1 will need to send it to your states RPAM distro, assuming he can provide it.

    Hopefully you’ve confronted him.

You need to have a hard conversation with him before you start defaming him and spreading rumors and withholding  personnel actions.

Thats a quick way to an IG conversation.

    Pin this to the top

Surprised this isnt at the top. Instead of jumping to conclusions immediately, have him provide those documents and try to get it sorted for him.

If he isnt able to provide documents for any of it, then yeah, sit down, see what's going on. Is it really that he doesnt have these records? Can he request them from the marines HRC equivalent? Have him CC you in any official correspondence.

Listen first, think second and act last.

I am a prior Marien who went guard (now reserve officer)

There's a joke here about how Marines can't spell, but I don't want you and your Marine shipmates to "semper fi" me with your K-Bars while I sleep, so I'll refrain. 😁

This. I don’t think someone currently serving would lie about something like this, although there are a lot of weirdos out there. If he’s been a good troop then f it, take his word (for now)

Are you sure he doesn't have Marine time? My ippsa is still fucked up RE my prior service.

Ask for his DD214 from his Marine time

My IPPSA doesn't even have my prior Army time lmao there's just a 4.5 year gap in there.

Mine is an absolute mess. About half of my prior shit has made it in in the last 3.5 years.

I mean. Shitty. Sure. But if he's a young kid then the sit down should suffice and see how he takes it from there. Idt this is something to ruin his career over.

If he was posting stuff about it, using it to get ahead in his career officially, wearing tabs....then absolutely light him up. But for now I think the best COA is a sit down and see how it progresses over 6 months or so

There’s also a chance that the green weenie screwed him over and they didn’t do him right at MEPS and that’s why his prior service records don’t show up on Ippsa or whatever. Orr he is a lying pos

I've seen that happen before, some guy got fucked on prior service time because of some paperwork bullshit. Took a while to fix it

It's definitely possible, and even though it is unlikely I wouldn't tear into him without being damn sure.

Best bet would be to call Ranger Training Battalion with his claimed graduation date and see if they have his record. RTB in Benning keeps a list of graduates for at least ten years IIRC.

    Marine to National Guard

At least he was smart and chose a believable story. Like half the natty guard is prior service marines, so that wouldn’t beg any questions.

If someone tells me they were SF I immediately start looking for red flags. If someone tells me they went Marines to NG I don’t blink twice

It’s even more believable the more they won’t shut up about the Marines. And how much more badass he was while in the corps than the current NG unit (never mind he wasn’t combat arms and did desk jobs).

We had a guy who came from the marines over to active army. While in the corps he was a mailman. I think the name was mail service technician or something I can’t remember and don’t care enough to look. Anywho he got booted from the army after popping hot for cocaine when we got back from NTC.

I feel like context is needed, like is it just Joe snuffy being like “oh yeah I dated the cheerleading team captain in high school and scored a winning goal” type boasting, or was he trying to instruct other joes with a “when I was in the corps we did it like this” or “that’s not how Ranger school taught us how to do it”.

Everyone has a deployment story that has become exaggerated over time as it gets retold, if it’s just the occasional tall tale, a sit down might be enough, if it went much further additional considerations would apply.

Not having documents on iperms doesnt mean anything. Im prior service and no army system that i have access to says anything about it, not even my transferable awards. Recruiter didnt put it in and the retention nco is too lazy to do it. Still get paid for 8 years of service, have a DD-214, and both my SRB and medical records from my time in the marine corps.

It seems pretty common for documents to not reflect iperms on SMs that cross over between branches. Now if he is actively trying to get his iperm corrected to reflect it, such as Ranger School graduation so he can wear the tab, it would give some validity. Also not sure why he wouldn’t be trying to fight to get his Ranger ASI added unless he’s lying.

You gotta nip this in the bud. You don't have to make a public example of him but you need to pull him into an office, lay out his records and tell him that unless he can provide documentation of his prior service he needs to STFU or it will become a much bigger deal.

Make a stolen valor video for youtube and cash in

If he’s otherwise a great soldier I’d guess that his IPERMS is just fucked up and he actually was a Marine. IPERMS records (especially those involving breaks in service, transferring between branches, or transferring between components) get fucked up literally all the time and it’s extremely difficult to get it fixed.

Marine okay that’s a regular occurrence. But a Marine that went to Ranger school also and has no prior service records…. Some checking is in order.

Find a local marine, entice him with crayons and dip, have him ask very marine specific questions, it's like a different language almost so the marine will instantly approve of him or try to fight/fuck/eat him.

Prior service marine reserves with 12 years and 3 deployments and now in the guard for 7. From first hand experience, ippsa doesn't show much in terms of my prior service. Has only one of my DD214 and my unit wont let me weqr any awards unless i have the award warrants for them, which i don't. Even going to nat archives, they will only send me a DD214 with the awards listed and no award letter. To me, it was never about the chess candy so i never kept a love me wall. But he should be able to support his claim with more specific details like which units he was with and where he went to schools.

Verify with his DD214 from the marine corps. If he’s lying, smoke the shit out of him all weekend.

Before getting into too much, have a sit down with him and let him know his prior time in the Marines, etc isn't showing up in any of the systems. Tell him you'll need his DD214 and any other awards and certificates from schools he went to to correct it, then watch his response.

It'll either be a subtle gotcha or maybe his records really are screwed up. Fixed either way.

Dude just sounds like he’s trying to sound cool to fit in? Regardless that’s wrong and definately should be counseled. Hopefully he’s a youngster and can be counseled and have it actually stick and turn out to be a good solider moving forward .

Yo my guy, Marines dont use ippsa, and iperms not having anything makes perfect sense. Ask him for proof, or a dd214. Then proceed.

I dont have a lot of records that switched over or at least got uploaded to iperms

Iperms not having documents doesn't mean much. I have a superior unit award with no record on where it came from. But it's on my STP...so idk.

But he could be telling the truth and some paperwork got fucked while going to NG from Marines.

IPERMS doesn’t always have prior service documents.

DD 4s can be incorrect like any other document. If he wants his points statement to be correct then he’ll need to submit his prior service documents.
