Hi! I'm Ash! I am a minor. Mod of @this-is-infantilization and @this-is-lookism . To see my possible biases and blind spots I'm white from Catalonia, gender non conforming, aroace, demiplatonic and afamilial. This blog is dedicated to things I deem important politically and morally sometimes linked to my favourite media. With critical/literary analysis, fanart and sometimes fics.
If you want to see only my analysis/opinions they're in the tag #4shtronomy's analysis (at least they should be, idk why some don't appear)
But I want to leave some things clear in here:
- My analysis aren't to be taken as perfect. I'm human, and so I make mistakes. Important to note that a lot of my writing is done in one sitting or two.
- If you disagree with my takes if you're respectful and counterargument it with constructive criticism I'm more than fine with it. I encourage it even.
- I also encourage you to add things to my takes.
- My takes are not the absolute truth. You should still read them with the addition of other takes to try to make your own opinions. I want this to be a space to be able to practice media literacy.
- I don't limit myself to character arcs or plot holes. I try to go with full contextualization with history, culture, subtext, stereotypes and more.
- I do have a strict DLDR policy with fan stuff. I won't do any critical analysis on any fanfiction that doesn't explicitly ask it. Unsolicited advice with things that are done for enjoyment for free is a dick move
- This is not a safe space for racism, homophobia, classism, ableism, sexism, colorism, transphobia, colonizer ideology, fascism, alterhumanisia, paramisia or any kind of discrimination.
- My fanart is just that, it'll reflect in some ways my ideology but it won't be part of any actual analysis I do. I just like drawing.
- My fics are fine. They're not perfect by any means, my creative writing skills need work. But they will reflect my ideology a lot more than fanart, and any asks about some of those decisions are more than welcome.
- My rebloggs are analysis of media, politics/ethics or fanart I especially liked!

If you're talking about people with a specific sex characteristic please just say "people with [specific sex characteristic]". Nothing makes you look stupider than saying "afabs" when you mean "people with uteruses" or saying "men and pre-op transfems" when you mean "people with testes". There is already a vested social interest in oppressing intersex people please do not contribute to making them invisible.333,9026,486

4shtronomyMar 31ALTALTALTHAPPY BIPOLAR DAY!!! [PT: HAPPY BIPOLAR DAY!!!]Bipolar is still very much stigmatized right now, we need more awareness! Here's a drawing of Ian Gallagher to celebrate! (Also cross posted on Instagram, same @, to spread it more!) This disorder is very stigmatized and it's very commonly used as slang for moody, which undermines the severeness of it's symptoms. This shouldn't keep happening, and is one of the many reasons we need to have these days. It's characterized by episodes of mania, hypo mania and depression. An estimated 15–20% of those with BD die by suicide. Approximately 30–60% attempt suicide during their lifetime. Among those with BD, 40–50% overall and 78% of adolescents engaged in self-harm.Here's the link to the international bipolar foundation for more info: https://ibpf.org/#Also i know he at the point i dres him didn't have it/didn't show symptoms#but im shit at rendering buzzcuts#or young adults#so sorry#bipolar#bipolar day#bipolar disorder#bipolar awareness36

4shtronomyRebloggedMar 28thisisparamisiaMar 28FollowZoophile vs Teratophilia vs Beastiality[ID: Zoophile vs Teratophilia vs Beastiality /End ID]Zoophilia refers to human or otherwise sapient beings who are attracted to/aroused by non-human animals. This comes in an array of subsets, as many zoophiles have specific animals they find attractive/arousing. A few of the most common subsets of zoophilia are Equinophilia (attraction/arousal towards horses), Aelurophilia (attraction/arousal towards cats), Canophilia (attraction/arousal towards dogs), Entomophilia (attraction/arousal towards insects), and Formicophilia (attraction/arousal towards small animals crawling/nibbling them).Teratophilia refers to the attraction/arousal towards monsters. Like zoophilia, this comes in an array of subsets, many of which share similarities (or fully overlap) with necrophilia (attraction/arousal towards corpses) and zoophilia. This is because many monsters are undead beings and/or have animalistic characteristics (claws, paws, tails, fangs, venom, fur, scales, tentacles, etc.) For example, a teratophile who is attracted to dragons may also be attracted to dinosaurs, snakes, lizards, or similar such creatures.People who perform beastiality, on the other hand, are abusing, assaulting, or forcing an animal into a situation that it does not have the ability to consent to on a sapient being's level. What differentiates zoophilia & teratophilia from beastiality?[ID: What differentiates zoophilia & teratophilia from beastiality? /End ID.]Zoophiles and teratophiles are having thoughts/feelings. Thoughts and feelings =/= harmful action. Most zoophiles and teratophiles use outlets such fiction, roleplaying with a consenting partner, creating personal vent art, or thought training to redirect their train of thoughts, or a whole other range of activities that do not inflict harm upon others.Think of it this way - if you have an intrusive thought about breaking someone's neck, does that mean you're going to do it? No, because its an intrusive thought. It doesn't indicate that you're an actually dangerous person.Additionally, many animal abusers are doing so out of opportunism, rather than attraction/arousal - its the same way that most men who rape men are straight [link.] And even animal abusers who are also zoophiles or teratophiles aren't abusive because of their paraphilias, they are abusive because they have made bad choices.Paraphilic disorders are skewed towards criminals because the general population rarely seek a diagnosis, and psychologists tend to only test these conditions on criminals who have committed animal-related crimes. Think of it like this - if autism was mainly only tested in criminals, then autism would be known as a "crime condition" too, and be deemed "more common" in criminals than in the general public.Stigmatization is what prevents the general public from seeking diagnosis. If diagnosed, they are often ostracized, institutionalized, heavily drugged, pushed into conversion therapy (which does not work), and/or put onto anti-androgens to kill their sex drive (which is both stripping them of autonomy and also isn't guaranteed to work, because some of them experience attraction rather than arousal, and killing libido would only kill arousal, not attraction.)1641
4shtronomyRebloggedMar 28narc-rantsMar 21FollowAnonymous asked:what should people keep in mind when writing characters with NPD?narc-rants answered:Good question! NPD presentations often fall into more grandiose or more vulnerable, although all people with the disorder have both grandiosity and vulnerability. I’ll try to give advice for both ends of the spectrum, but keep in mind that people can fall in the middle tooWriting overt/grandiose:The more overt/grandiose are usually reactive with anger or frustration when their mindset is challenged, burying their vulnerability to the point they refuse to acknowledge or look at that part of themself. They are usually deeply angered when people try to tell them that there is something wrong with them, as the idea of being seen as imperfect or flawed makes them feel exposed or out of control. When they are alone in their own thoughts, people’s words or criticisms may circle in their mind like a rumination, making them feel like they need to reassert their power to “prove” those people wrong and ensure their image is perfect. They DO have high vulnerability and insecurity, they just cope with it by trying to run away from it because their vulnerability can feel scary to face, as it challenges their idea of being perfect. Instead of blaming oneself, the blame goes outwards onto people, society, or their unluckiness. The main struggle of people with highly grandiose NPD is a lack of control over people’s perception of them. This lack of control can lead to the anger response that we see sometimes. What’s important to pay attention to is that this mindset very often comes from a trauma or fear they’re unable to process, such as being abused emotionally or physically. They felt like they were out of control, weak, or degraded as a child, so now they need to be the one in power instead. This trauma may be deeply repressed, as admitting to it would mean admitting to vulnerability. But it WILL show up, they may experience flashbacks or other PTSD symptoms that they suffer through alone, out of fear that others will judge them for their weakness. They may even brush off the trauma, acting as if it wasn’t a big deal and didn’t even affect them at all. They’re also often highly competitive, with games, sports, opinions even. They may push others into competing verbally, physically, or intellectually just to feed their ego and prove something to themself or others. People may even be annoyed or confused by this because the person with NPD craves conflict while others see things like board games and conversations more casually. Writing highly grandiose NPD is the harder choice because it’s usually the kind of archetype that gets villainized in media. The most important piece is recognizing their vulnerabilities. Make the reader understand and sympathize with their pain, help them understand that they were once a child with a different reality, give the character breakdowns they experience when alone, have them experience the feeling of emptiness that comes about when they realize they don’t feel truly intimate with anyone, that they only really trust in themself. They may struggle to realize they’re “not normal”, believing that other people are simply inferior, but often that belief is challenged when they’re constantly ending up alone and isolated. If you know Gregory House, he’s a good example. He can be cruel, including to people who love him, and he acts like he doesn’t care, but when he’s alone he ends up realizing he’s suffering from the lack of intimacy, from the fact he devalues and tries to get one over on everyone. And it’s a cycle that repeats. Someone with NPD doesn’t just “learn from failure” and then wake up and change their mindset, they make hundreds of mistakes, often refusing to admit they were mistakes at all. They may know internally that they fucked up, but refuse to admit it to others or even themself. They’re very very attached to this defense, as the narcissism is what’s protected them for years of their life.Writing covert/vulnerable:The more covert/vulnerable are very much aware of their insecurity, constantly second-guessing and trying to convince themself and others that they aren’t really bad or inferior. They frequently have bouts of self-loathing, insolation, seeking attention or proving themself in ways like hypersexuality, serial dating, eating disorders, dangerous activities, etc. They may be very conscious of their shortcomings and feel extreme jealousy and high anxiety and paranoia because they can’t tolerate being disliked or judged, constantly worrying that they’re being perceived a certain way. Unlike highly grandiose NPD, they may have big emotional outbursts in front of others, whether intentional or not. They need to be validated, even if it means exaggerating or seeking pity on purpose. They often suffer when alone because they define themself based on other’s opinions, so they NEED to be seen and interacted with, they need to be emotionally consoled and complimented. Also unlike highly grandiose NPD, they are constantly tortured by their trauma and shortcomings, all of that being very surface-level instead. They may even be obsessed with being a “good person”, trying so hard to prove they aren’t as bad as they feel. They’re in a constant emotional up and down, often having a higher tendency for self-harm or suicidal urges to punish themself or escape feeling so out of control. They often have bigger shifts between self-love and self-hatred than those with grandiose NPD, having very high highs and very low lows, often switching between the two in only a second of being triggered by something. What to avoid:Making your character a murderer or physically violent probably. Unless many other characters are also murderers, don’t make them the bad guy evil villain. We already have too many “narcissist” bad guys. You could instead make time an anti-hero or just a complex character! Someone who is maybe more of a chaotic neutral, who is self-serving but can still end up working hard towards good feats. Take Gregory House as an example again: he’s a man who struggles a lot and can be very cruel, but he ultimately saves many many lives and is still cared about by people in his life despite his struggles. We see how self-loathing he is behind closed doors, his struggles with substances and depression and otherwise.Another very important thing to include is to really give them an interesting personality. Make them funny or curious or quirky, don’t just make their entire character about being a narcissist. Music taste is NOT a personality trait, try to avoid this altogether. Many writers basically just create an evil narcissist character and then make his music taste the most interesting part of his personality. Alex DeLarge is obsessed with Beethoven and classical music, Patrick Bateman is obsessed with listening to music, Hannibal likes Bach…I could go on and on. Just don’t do it. It’s such a lazy way to give an “evil” character a personality. Honestly making them unreasonably attractive and well-dressed can be a poor choice too. Part of NPD is that they’re convinced they need to be or are perfect even though they’re human like any other person. They don’t need to be clean-cut, stylish, and gorgeous to have NPD. Them being attractive or rich is not what gives them NPD. Remember, NPD is irrational, that’s what makes it a disorder. Also remember that someone with NPD can be abused in the present as well, they’re not always just a mean emotionally manipulative perpetrator. They may also be a victim, being hurt by someone actively or suffering from something in the story that isn’t a childhood trauma.148127

4shtronomyReblogged isuggestlandbackMar 26rebeccathenaturalistJan 16, 2024FollowThe Guts of Predatory Cats Can Destroy CWD PrionsThe prions that cause chronic wasting disease in deer are nearly indestructible. So it's good news to learn cat guts are their mortal enemy.National Deer Association |Okay. So. You know how some people want to finish exterminating all large predatory mammals so they have less competition for deer and so they don't occasionally lose livestock? And you know how native deer species in North America have been hit increasingly hard with Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in the past couple of decades due to overpopulation thanks to the eradication of large predatory mammals that normally keep them in check? We already have evidence that reintroducing predatory mammals to their native ranges not only knocks deer populations back to a healthier level, and now we've discovered that apparently the digestive systems of cougars and bobcats are lethal to CWD prions. Prions are among the most difficult pathogens* to eliminate; you have to heat them up to about 1,800 degrees F in order to thoroughly destroy them. And prion diseases like CWD are almost universally fatal. So to find that these wild cats can safely eat CWD-infected animals AND significantly reduce the chances that the prions will be spread to other deer is a pretty big deal, especially since some other animals like coyotes and crows do pass prions undamaged through their digestive systems. And it's just one more example of why an ecosystem needs all of the species that have evolved in it over thousands of years, not just those are convenient for humans to have around. The spread of CWD is directly related to the overpopulation of deer, and it's likely that continuing to reintroduce large predatory mammals to their native range will help quell this awful prion disease.2816,12716,630

While I obviously appreciate seizure warnings because it means someone was considerate enough to give some thought to our safety, it's still saying: "We care about you, so here's your warning to stay away! We care about you, but don't forget that you're not welcome here! We care about you, but you're not allowed in! No, we're not going to change it, but look! Here's a warning! We didn't NEED to put it there, but did so of our own good will! Please be sure to thank us as you walk away. Plus, everyone else loves it soooo...yeah! No hard feelings, it's just our artistic expression! You understand! You're welcome! :D" And it ALWAYS happens. Before anyone asks, no this isn't just about the TADC episode. That's just the most recent example that made me want to bring this up. This is about EVERYTHING. No really, take a look around. Commercials and ads. Emergency vehicles. First responders. Bars and clubs. TV shows and movies. Cameras. Concert clips. Live music. Music videos. Movie trailers. News clips/footage. Video games. Optical illusions that simulate vibrations/movement. Fireworks. Random customized cars outside. Flashy halloween decorations every fall. "Old Web" aesthetics coming back. Unfiltered eyestrain images designed to "grab attention" with bright high-contrast and saturation. Once you start to notice, you'll never stop noticing, and then maybe you'll understand why we feel so alone and frustrated. And most off the time, there aren't any warnings because they're not required. And then someone else always comes by and says "You made sure to thank them for putting in the warning right? After all, they didn't NEED to put it there. I bet you're so thankful they did! Now go somewhere else while we have our fun. :)" 4shtronomyMar 23Okay but seriously. Flashing lights in advertisements/Halloween lights/Christmas lights in the city should just be banned/have specific times+moments to see it. Not only for people with seizures (which is very important. Like very. I'm just saying other examples because it's just bad in general). But people with light sensitivity (ASD, maybe it's a trigger from trauma, etc), babies sleeping, people driving (it's a hazard. Literally. Very common also.), blind people (as most have at least some light sensitivity), etc. I'm not trying to derail. But what I mean it's that this should be banned. People shouldn't have to thank when there's a warning because it shouldn't happen. Where I live there's the opening of Christmas lights, the only time where the public ones are flashing. It's a specific thing. But people can have these lights everywhere. It's a very big hazard that should be changed. The same way curbs were changed and now wheelchair users, people with rollators, people with baby carriers, bicycles, etc can cross the street better. But when there's one we don't say thanks. It's once there's not a ramp that we make complaints. Because it's a need, and praising things that should be a must only further separates it from normalcy. 4shtronomyMar 23I also completely forgot to add this. But this also applies for people with migraines. And another thing that should be banned are those lights that have the speed of the flashing that light does low enough that our brains process it but our eyes don't. This isn't widely known. But screens/fluorescent lights/and more commonly to cut costs aren't strong enough to have the light not be received as flashing by our mind. But because our eyes can't perceive it but our brain does it can create/increase headaches/migraines/etc (I don't know if it has any repercussions on seizures, sorry) Also I don't know the exact name, but it's very common. If anyone knows what it is please say so, because I really recommend looking it up when buying screens/lightbulbs for anyone with chronic migraines! It's helped me a lot! kunaigirlMar 24Thank you so much for your thoughtful additions! You're absolutely right!!! People should reblog this version too. 4shtronomyMar 25Quick last incision. It's very easy to go to your local city's/town's official website or in person and ask them this. I've done this kind of thing more than once, and if you find others to also ask the same and it's reasonably explained it can change! I don't know how it works asking nationally or with bigger representatives, but I'm sure it's basically the same. If there's enough pressure and in this case maybe even medical care being a big part, change can be made! Call/email your representatives, your country's government, your mayor, etc. It works and it's important! #seizures#actually epilepsy#epileptic problems#epileptic#epilepsy awareness#blindness#migraine#ASD#autism#actually autistic#autistic#photosensitivity#important#call your representatives#contact your reps#contact your senators#call your legislators#call your senators#call your reps#take action… See all56388

Because minors can and do engage on kink too. And I personally may not as I'm sex repulsed, but more than 50% of the answers, 57 at the moment, I've received as of now are from people under 18.If you personally don't feel comfortable with the fact that minors can and do engage in sexual relations, know about them, and are commonly in online spaces that talk about it, just hiding their age (as no one is entitled to know my or anyone's age online btw, I just give it to give context for my analysis.), then maybe you don't understand how people work or teenagers. Because just taking them out of the conversation only makes it so that we are less informed about consent, safety, and it tends to increase the possibility of grooming. As when there's no safe spaces to talk about sex as minors, some end up taking their age and end up in unsafe spaces with unsafe people. #kink safe#youth liberation#youth lib#kink culture#kink safety#kink#sex ed#sex education31

4shtronomyRebloggedMar 24intersexfairyOct 25, 2024FollowPCOS is an intersex variation, full stop. The reason that's controversial is that just accepting it as one undermines the gender and sex binaries. The idea that we're just rare mutants that need to be fixed, or can be ignored for the sake of the majority, would further begin to fall apart. Recognizing people with PCOS as intersex makes it harder for them to treat people with PCOS like broken women.Doctors treat their intersex traits as a malady that needs to be fixed. Even in the case of a cis women with PCOS and gender dysphoria or health issues, the treatment is so often laced with intersexism and coercion. There is no real choice given, and no affirmation of one's body as worthy of respect regardless of what it looks like. This isn't unusual in the treatment of intersex people - people do try to hide from us the fact we're intersex (entirely, or by saying we have a disorder instead). But by not even considering people with PCOS under the umbrella, they prevent them from finding community with people like them, and advocating for themselves. This is all to say, people with PCOS are not less intersex than other intersex people. They are just as intersex, and face all the scrutiny that comes with it. But more than that, they are integral to intersex liberation - and queer liberation overall. Your story as an intersex person with PCOS matters. We need you, and we want you with us.May you find peace, community, and healing. May you find comfort and home in your body. May you find health and wellness. You are loved, and you belong - just as you are, and have yet to become.Sincerely, a trans intersex person who doesn't know if it's PCOS or something else.498281,697

If anyone knows what it is please say so, because I really recommend looking it up when buying screens/lightbulbs for anyone with chronic migraines! 4shtronomyRebloggedMar 23kunaigirlMar 22Follow"At least they put a warning! They cared enough to do that much, right? So why are you still upset?" While I obviously appreciate seizure warnings because it means someone was considerate enough to give some thought to our safety, it's still saying: "We care about you, so here's your warning to stay away! #op if you think i derailed be free to tell me#i wouldn't want that#but i feel like this had to be said#epilepsy#actually epileptic#actually epilepsy#epileptic problems#epilepsy awareness#rant#ASD#autism#blindness#epileptic#seizures#hazard#4shtronomy rants56388
4shtronomyRebloggedMar 23this-is-seizurismMar 23FollowWhat is a seizure trigger? Well to first understand them you need to know what a seizure is. If you aren’t familiar I’ve made a post explaining them here. A seizure trigger is essentially a factor that can cause a seizure or lower a person’s seizure threshold in someone who is already susceptible. Some triggers include: missing medications, heat, flashing lights, menstrual cycle timing, alcohol, fevers, stress, fatigue and even certain times of the day.I’ve already briefly spoken a bit about photosensitivity as a trigger via an ask and it can be found here.Photosensitivity comes up a lot on this blog, however I want to note that using any kind of trigger against a person with seizures is wrong and dangerous. A big problem with photosensitivity is that it can be difficult to get the person away from the triggers compared to other ones and as long as flashing lights are in front of them they are likely to continue seizing. This can lead into status epilepticus which can happen in epileptic seizures. This is considered when a person is having a seizure lasting longer than 5 minutes. This can lead to brain damage and even death. Aside from the risk of status, the person can also risk injuries from falling including concussions, fractures, and more. People are NOT joking when they are saying you can kill someone by triggering them into a seizure. More information on seizure triggers and status epilepticus 15382

4shtronomyReblogged support-for-the-suicidalMar 19emma-o-ytNov 4, 2025FollowFacts about involuntary psychiatric hold:The United Nations recognises it as a form of torture. It increases suicide risk by 191 times. It increases the risk of dying from heart disease and stroke by 3.5 times (no shit on that one, forcing extremely high doses of heavy drugs on someone without even titrating it does that)45% of patients in psych wards have experienced sexual violence during an admission. You are a shitty person if you try to get someone involuntarily committed. sucrefemmeDec 20, 2025Some links to back this stuff up, sorry if u posted ur own links op I’ll reblog those if u did The UN Humans Rights Council report which includes discussions of how stripping the rights of people to accept or decline care erodes their dignity and personhood. Section V: Recommendations subsection 2 explicitly advocates for an end to involuntary hospitalization. This report also cites lots of other relevant data and is worth reading. “Danger to Self and Others” a study that showed that in “compliers” (ie: people who are edge cases and are committed by some physicians but would not have been by others) rates of suicide and violent crime within three months of involuntary hospitalization rose significantly. A comparative study that assesses a lot of other studies’ conclusions about the harm of involuntary holds compared to voluntary holds. This one is dense but worth it to understand that this isn’t an issue of data collection, the harm is visible in the aggregate2023 study that found 45% of patients report being sexually assaulted in the psych ward. This study also notes that the numbers could be more, due to patient fears of reporting. Here’s an article I personally find fascinating on the odd legality of psych holds in the US (do the cops have the right to seize your stuff if they think you’re a danger? Why the fuck are cops being allowed to make these assessments? How the fuck is this legal? Should it be legal?) Having a loved one going through a mental health crisis is a horrible feeling. And it can feel right to try to send them to a “professional” or call in a wellness check when you can’t handle it or can’t get to them physically. But it really can’t be overstated: involuntary psych holds are proven to harm those who are struggling far more than they are proven to help. If you are being involuntarily committed or fear you might be, you do still have rights and you are not subject to the same restrictions as if you were being arrested. The legal article I linked talks about it a bit for the US, and here’s a document on it for California. queeranarchismJan 14Also a lot of calls to get someone involuntarily committed end with that person being murdered by the cops & not just in the US. In the Netherlands, half of the people murdered by the cops were killed during a mental health crisis. Never ever ever call to have someone involuntarily committed, unless you want their blood on your hands. 1924,4535,963

4shtronomyReblogged this-is-audismMar 18ublock-originKoko the gorilla did irreparable damage to the average hearing person's understanding of sign language40ouncesandamuleMar 5, 2023I would love to learn more if you've got a rant locked and loadedublock-originKoko, as with most "signing" apes, was "taught" modified ASL (bc their hands are different and they physically cant make all the same signs we can) by hearing scientists who did not speak ASL. They would learn a few signs, and then teach them to the apes, who would associate signs to objects and rewards. The most jarring thing was, the apes are completely unable to learn grammar, and would say things like "Give orange me give eat orange me eat orange give me eat orange give me you" (actual quote by Nim Chimpsky), which their handlers would interpret as a sentence, when in reality the apes are simply mimicking signs in hopes of getting a reward. Those hearing handlers would see things like "Nim eat" and "eat Nim" and intepret those as equally meaning "Nim wants to eat".More damning, the lack of understanding of ASL by the hearing scientists meant that most of what Koko and Nim Chimpsky "spoke" was purely the scientists just seeing what they wanted to see. A Deaf person was brought in to interact with Nim, and they were instructed to not give him any food until he signed "food". They spent hours with an increasingly distressed chimp who did not sign anything, but Nim's hearing handlers would see him move his hand close to his mouth and go "oh! there it is! he signed it!", and while they spent the whole day signing, they didnt see Nim signing back. With Koko, her handler would claim Koko would sometimes mix up signs like "need/knee", "I/eye", "people/nipple" because they "sound alike/rhyme" but... they don't. Those words rhyme in spoken English. They don't rhyme at all in ASL. Koko wouldn't know those words rhymed in english because she DIDN'T speak english, she "spoke" modified ASL. Of course, as the scientists did not speak ASL either, they didn't realize it, and just assumed random movements Koko meant were signs, and tried to think what she "could have meant instead" by thinking of what words sounded like the ones equivalent to what she had just "signed", even though an ASL speaker would not make a mistake like that.I'm not even going to get into the fact that almost all of what those apes signed was due to direct prompting from scientists, the fact that they did not use language when alone, or the fact that most of what they answered was complete gibberish (which resulted in videos like Koko's climate address (yes, really) having to be heavily edited and cut to make it seem like she was actually speaking anything that made sense). One really nasty side effect of this was like. The amount of hearing people who decided to try learning ASL and other sign languages because of the vague possibility of being able to communicate with apes, instead of, you know, the ACTUAL possibility of communicating with and appreciating Deaf people. (one person even said that Koko inspired them to learn ASL so they could communicate with their deaf friend, like... why the fuck did your FRIEND not inspire you to learn ASL??? did you really have to wait for a fucking gorilla failing to learn sign language to think "hmm, maybe talking to my friend would be nice!"??????)The talking ape experiments helped cement in hearing people's consciousness the idea that ASL, and sign languages in general, are just poorly transcribed forms of spoken English that can be easily learned even by a chimp, instead of complex, independent languages with their own histories, cultures and internal variation.11222,21827,872
