“I’m shattered.” It’s a phrase that rings throughout crowded buses, packed trains, and the rush of London’s underground. In fact, it’s a sentiment British workers know all too well. And while we may be a company that embraces the odd, we’re not shy about stating the obvious: Britain’s commuters are exhausted, running on empty, and they need more sleep, stat.
Our research reveals that Google searches for “Why do I want to sleep all the time” have skyrocketed by 250% over the last five years, and “always tired” rakes in a jaw-dropping 89,000 searches each month.
In fact, according to our recent Reddit poll, despite choirs of crying babies, swarms of crisp wrappers, crowds of commuters and unpredictable temperatures, nearly a third of us (31%) are catching up on sleep during our travels to work. So, naturally, this got us thinking, and we just couldn’t stop mulling over the “what ifs”.
What if we could bring more sleep to the lives of Brits? What if we could stop the exhaustion epidemic in a totally Odd way? What if we could design a luxury mattress specifically for the commuter on the go? So we did just that.
Let’s face it—the daily commute has always been a bit of a necessary evil. But with the City Napper to help you reclaim those precious Z’s, suddenly it doesn’t seem quite so bad. Dare we say we’re even excited to hop on the bus to work? Here are the key features making it the perfect commuter mattress.
With the average commute lasting 28 minutes, British workers spend over 242 hours a year simply getting to work—that’s over nine days of potential rest. In Central London, where commuter times are nearly double, this figure soars.
In fact, commuters in London, Greater Manchester, and the West Midlands could reclaim over 250 hours of sleep if given the chance to nap during their travels. Imagine a mattress specifically designed for the commuter—one that transforms the daily grind into an experience of comfort. Speaking as no strangers to dirty trains and uncomfortable seats, we’re confident these would fly off the shelves.
After conducting an analysis of UK transport, we created the ultimate “napability” index to find the best UK commutes for napping.
Each mode of transport was scored out of 25 based on how well it replicated the best sleeping conditions. The rankings were based on five key factors: temperature, lighting, noise, comfort, and cleanliness. Each factor contributed to a total napability score, with a perfect score of 25 representing the ultimate nap-friendly environment.
Car-pooling in your colleague’s passenger seat ranks as the top environment for commuter napping, offering a relatively ideal setup with moderate noise levels, a clutter-free space, potential for darkness during evening rides, and solid head and neck support. However, cars aren’t available to all commuters, and taxis, though a solid option, can get expensive quickly.
In second place is the train. While onboard temperatures are closer to the comfort range (about 21°C), trains usually keep their lights on for passenger safety, which can disrupt sleep. Headrests and seats are inconsistent across services, and some passengers may not have a seat at all (and who can sleep standing up?). Noise levels on trains can also be challenging, averaging between 90–100 decibels, and seat cleanliness is also a big concern.
The humble British bus ranks third. Although temperatures are usually manageable, lights must remain on whenever passengers are present, and seat design often lacks adequate support for the lower back, head, and neck. Noise levels tend to exceed 95 decibels, and tests reveal high bacteria levels on bus seats and floors, adding to the discomfort of napping.
In last place in London’s tube. Often so busy that commuters are forced to stand, loud enough to damage hearing, and riddled with nearly 100 strains of bacteria, the London underground ranked as an 8 out of 25 on the napability scale.
To put it simply, the City Napper is a game-changer. It’s not just a travel companion; it’s your ticket to reclaiming precious sleep, even on your longest working days. Designed with the busiest workers in mind, it turns those wasted commuting moments into something genuinely restorative. Think wellness on the go—because we believe rest shouldn’t end when you leave your bed.
