Bicyclist dies after confrontation with Mesa police, probe begins

An investigation is underway in the death of a 52-year-old bicyclist who police said refused to stop for officers who chased him Saturday night and used "physical strikes and multiple Taser deployments” to arrest him, authorities said Monday.

Eric Baker was riding a bicycle just after 8:30 p.m. April 4 near Dobson Road and University Drive where police saw him within traffic lanes on University without a required front light – a violation of Arizona law, police stated in a release.

Officers used emergency lights and sirens, but Baker fled west on University Drive before turning north into an apartment complex. Two officers began chasing Baker on foot while a third officer repositioned at the opposite side of the complex.
