Election 2026: Final Results Will Not Be Known until Saturday following the Vote

Hungary Today 2026.04.10.

Vote counting begins immediately after 7:00 p.m. in most polling stations, thus, the publication of preliminary results—along with an indication of the percentage of votes processed—is expected to begin around 8:00 p.m.

At the same time—at 7:00 p.m. on April 12—the National Election Office (NVI) will begin counting votes received by mail and will publish the results continuously.

Votes cast at diplomatic missions and through re-registration, as well as postal votes at diplomatic missions, must arrive at the National Election Office no later than the fourth day following the election.

The NVI counts the mail-in ballots, sorts the votes cast at diplomatic missions and through re-registration by individual parliamentary constituency (OEVK), and then, on Friday, April 17, it will transfer them to the relevant National Assembly single-member constituency election offices, where the designated polling stations will count them on April 17 or 18.

Based on the above, on the evening of the election, the vote-counting committees and the NVI — depending on turnout figures — will have counted approximately 92–95% of the votes cast for the national list, while the vote-counting committees will have counted 94–97% of the votes cast for single-member district candidates.

Thus, in the event of a close race, it is possible that in some OEVKs or on the national list, by the end of the week following the election—with 100% of the votes processed—the election results may differ from the preliminary data released on election day.
