Woo lassoos Cage for new Western

This article is more than 23 years old

Director John Woo looks set to reunite with Nicolas Cage in his next project, Land of Destiny. The film will be a change of style for action guru Woo - it is an epic historical Western about Irish and Chinese railway workers in 19th-century America. "There are cultural clashes and racial problems," the director explains. "But eventually they become good friends and build their dreams together."

Speaking at a news conference in his native Hong Kong, Woo announced that he wants Cage to play the lead Irish character and Chow Yun Fat his Chinese counterpart. Fat previously collaborated with Woo on 1991's Hard Boiled before finding further fame in Anna and the King and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Cage teamed up with the director on 1996's Face/Off and recently worked with him again on Windtalkers, a second world war drama released in the UK on August 16.
