TFR is closer to KR than TNO, but sadly has its fair share of railroading, waiting and other issues. It depends on where in the world you play and there are definitely parts of the mod that are better than others. Playing in the US means constant action and focuses pretty much exclusively on a huge war, if you just want to have fun and play out a bigger and badder version of KR's ACW you can play there and have a blast. Asia and Europe however will have you wait around until ~2025 for the big fight to happen, and unless you're proactive it can be a pretty shitty waiting game. There's also railroading based on the war outcomes, paths being locked behind who won/who you lost to, and more in both Europe and Asia. Those parts are the most TNO-like.

Where I disagree with the above posted is that there are tons of wars you can get involved in while you wait since the world is burning, so you can easily spend that waiting time grinding generals with volunteer conflicts. Unlike TNO, the mod gives you complete freedom in that regard to fight all over Africa, the Americas and Asia. There's even a world conquest route for one US tag, and the devs seem to have listened to the players when they said they wanted less railroading.

Is it feasible that Red Dusk could get rebuilt off of TFR? I know the UI submod exists but I'm replaying Red Dusk right now and it is very vanilla in many ways and I think it could benefit from TFR's set up and aesthetics. The economy, the techs, the political tab and the models for example stand out to me after playing TFR, especially with the gfx submod. The tech trees are particularly cluttered with redundant gear which serves no purpose, pic rel is the armour trees compared. It is likewise just as fucked in the air and naval trees, with subs being split into three different variants.

I don't necessarily think the TFR tech trees are perfect but compared to Red Dusk's it's like comparing a Lexus to a Lada. There really is no valid reason for having seven different tanks producible when the setting is Russia from 2000-2010. It vastly overcomplicates things compared to TFR's "Gen" system. I do think TFR has an issue of some tech being there just to be there but that looks like it will be expanded upon with more futuristic content later in development when the early game is filled out more.

So to recap: last year people started to joke about TFR reaching 600K before TNO. By then TNO had almost 590K and a lead of over 100K on TFR. Somehow, TNO might actually lose this one. No, I didn't believe that they'd actually fuck up a lead like that either for this meme to still be ongoing.

My issue with the National Front and PF in game is there is no reason why all the factions wouldn't consider ATW hostis humani generis.
The biggest mechanical problem ATW has right now is you can waste all your PP building Legitimacy only for the other factions to declare war on you.
If both of these things were addressed somehow, maybe in different ATW paths, then their inclusion would seem reasonable. But the Accelerationist and Satanist paths seem canonically impossible to coexist in the National Front or the continental united states without being stomped like a bug.

Older versions of OWB had very little of this because it's a smaller world, you have fewer divisions, the divisions contain fewer things, and there are also way fewer people, ideas, resources and other performance hogs. Late game inevitably gets laggy on anything huge like a globe-spanning war with millions of soldiers in the field because of how HOI4 is coded. So the solution has already been found: create scenarios that aren't as likely to cause things to slow down, or download a mod that limits divisions and other thing that makes the game perform thousands of hourly checks.
