doesn't help that the server has no advertising. we're on /vm/ now because the thread couldn't survive on /vg/. nobody comes on to /vm/.
there's also just big culture shifts going on. roleplaying games used to be a nerd activity, but they went mainstream. now, the younger non-mainstream guys hate them. they're cringe. so nobody is coming to play this. where will new people come from? you have to convince people who have already played this before to come back. but why would they? an event here and there might get people back for the event, but what convinces them to play more rounds? this game is quite a big investment. over an hour, maybe two, of pretty dedicated time to enjoy just one round. and for me, honestly, i have other things i want to do most days after work.

I doubt there's just one thing pushed players away, the other anons are probably right in what led to the decline in players but there's other things at at play, too.

Pop begets pop, people want to play where other people are playing, especially in a game like this where interaction with other players is integral to what makes it fun, so a bunch of people leaving /vg/station means more people are just going to leave after them.
There's a single digit number of players who will log on and play at dead pop, then a few more players who will play when there's a few other people on, then several more low pop players, but a dozen or so people who will only play when the server has at least 25+ other players. It doesn't help that some of these deadpop or lowpop players eat bans or keep banreq/ahelping other lowpop players and our retarded admins don't take raw playtime into account but only how long you've been apart of the community, so these lowpop players who've played hundreds of hours in the last year are on thin ice for bans while some tranny who can count how many rounds they've played in the past year on one hand are given clemency for being a shitter every time they long on because "muh oldfag". College dropout shitmins can't seem to grasp the basic fact that people who actually play more are going to be more likely to have admin incidents just because of the law of large numbers or whatever, like how people are most likely to get into a car accident within 5 minutes of their residence because that's where they spend the most amount of time driving. Stop punishing the people who actually play if you want to keep players.

The game can also just get boring for long-time players unless you're genuinely autistic. The enjoyment of the game is frontloaded and once you've played for a year or so, the novelty wears off. Only autistic people who enjoy doing the same fucking thing every round keep playing past that. That's probably why most of our low pop players are people who play the same few jobs every round. I'm generally opposed to pointless code changes but servers who have made significant changes to their codebase seem to have kept more players for longer because code changes kept things fresh for a while. /vg/station specifically doesn't have that many people adding major features so the game feels pretty stagnant. There are only so many gimmicks to pull off, there are only so many engines to set up, only so many wacky chem mixes to inject into people before all rounds start to just blend into each other and become forgettable.

Then there's the fact that Space Station's playerbase as a whole has changed and it now mostly consists of furries and trannies and they only want to play on safe spaces and ERP servers and not classic SS13. There's also a lot of players that don't necessarily fit into that group but they would rather play some spinoff codebase like the grimshart medieval ones or Colonial Marines. The traditional space station setting as a whole is declining to all the random spinoff servers that keep popping up. This game also isn't the most accessible to new players and the younger generation would much rather just play fucking Roblox or Fortnite or whatever anyways. The game was never going to last forever, but no other multiplayer game can say they've kept players for nearly 25 years, so Space Station 13 is quite fortunate in that regard.

Dorf, along with any other build-your-own-station or derelict repair map seems like they would be fun with a dozen or so dedicated autists, but will never work out in a regular round because it's the kind of thing that requires actual coordination and for people to do more than their bare minimum job routine. Across all the servers I've played, 'events' like these just end up with half the crew doing nothing or killing themselves or going AFK because they have no access to the job content they signed up for or just don't care about building the station at all while a few autists burn themselves out trying to get everything sorted out from scratch.

Engineering came pre-stocked with plenty of hardsuits but they were all hidden in the darkness behind a bunch of rubble so only a few people came across them.
The default atmos setup was also ass, with only an oxygen miner that was being piped directly into distro with from a vent that was limited in how much it could take in and wasn't connected to the air alarm for some reason, and running a 100% oxygen atmosphere is kinda a bad idea, so a nitrogen miner and chamber had to be set up by hand and some pipes reconfigured so a proper air mix could get pumped throughout the station. That didn't help much though since lots of areas just stayed spaced.

Just because the project is all open/free/libre or something doesnt mean you have a free, sensible, and consistent environment to do things with. SS14 for example, has many odd engine limitations that restrict what you can do, and they also tend to mess with their coding interfaces a ton. They also railroad you into using their own registration and listing servers, which they heavily moderate and will ban you if they don't like how you run your own game server or just dont like you in general.

Not to say youre gonna do the same things as SS14, but I do not want to consider the possibility of something happening and it ends up with you not in charge anymore or just you stop working on the project. I am not a programmer, I don't I will have the motivation to continue working on my specific project while also having to maintain the whole other backend in case of something horrible happening to the mainstream implementation of it. Maybe if you consistently keep it up for 3-4 years I would reconsider, but for now (if I ever do start on a project like this) I'll stick with BYOND.

But, /vg/station13 is the last vestige of "oldschool" ss13. Not tainted by modern designs. If you traveled back in time from 2015 to now, you could just pick it up instantly. Even most of the sprites look the same.
And, it doesn't have as many players as it used to. But I don't know who is the one considering ss13, as a whole, dead. Fuck ss13 with a broomstick.

I used to love this game, player since 2015. Loved creating funny moments with the fun peeps. When I got involved in the community, I was met by a fuckload of nasty behavior, so I bounced.

I also noticed during that time that all of the people who were fun to talk to and play with were getting bant. These bans were usually instigated by people who would try to assert their ego over others ingame and out of game, admins rarely spoke well of them, yet they were allowed to continue having sway over the playerbase by making ban requests.

My hope is that these problematic players eventually fall off so that we can return.
I look forward to reuniting with my brothers again!

TG has a fraction of the pop it used to have, same with Goon. There used to be five regular TG servers and 3/5 of those (Sybil, Manuel, Terry) would be near pop cap 24/7 with Bagil also regularly having a couple dozen players. TGMC would have another hundred or so players on top of that, so the TG servers as a whole went from usually having hundreds of players on at once, to barely getting one server full on a good day. Goon was similar, all four Goon servers would regularly be high pop, now it's usually just one or two Goon servers with mid pop. /vg/station would also have like at least a dozen people on 24/7 and would still reach highpop daily, now we're lucky to see more than 20 players.

On top of that, lots of rules and codebases for all major hub servers have been changed making the game a completely different experience from what it was a decade ago. While there is a degree of subjectivity regarding those changes, I think the fact that pop has universally declined outside of isolated furry ERP servers is proof enough that the game has gotten worse over time, otherwise people would still be playing it.
