I have finally caught my breath from today’s Letty Lynton news, so here’s an update.
I want to thank all of you for your kind words and excitement over the film’s release.
I have been keeping this secret for months, so it is wonderful to share the news with Joan fans around the world.
Now, for some history on the story of Letty Lynton . . .
MGM released the film in 1932 starring Joan, Robert Montgomery, Nils Asther, and Lewis Stone. After its release, two playwrights, Edward Sheldon and Margaret Ayer Barnes, filed a lawsuit claiming the film too closely matched their play, “Dishonored Lady” from 1930. The playwrights won in federal court and the film hasn’t been seen publicly or commercially since January 17, 1936.
I offered my legal reasoning to Warner Bros. in November 2025, as the play’s copyright was expiring, any “fruit of the tree” may now be considered available again, including Letty Lynton. Warner Bros. agreed with my theory and to release the film.
The play’s copyright expired on December 31, 2025, so the film may now be released commercially once again.
I can’t thank Warner Bros. and Warner Bros. Library Historian George Feltenstein for releasing the film. Without them, we wouldn’t have this fabulous film to see again on big and small screens.
Warner Bros. intends to release the Letty 4K restoration on DVD / Blu-ray in coming months.
I have the honor and privilege of hosting a screening of Letty at the upcoming TCM Film Festival in Hollywood, April 30th through May 3rd. George Feltenstein and I will discuss the film at noon, Friday, May 1st at The Egyptian Theatre!
Join us at the festival to see Letty Lynton after being locked away for over 90 years!
Given the film’s new availability following the TCM Film Festival, I would expect Letty to be shown in a classic film house NEAR YOU in coming months!
