Kindle E-Readers Released in 2012 or Earlier
Effective May 20, 2026, Amazon will end support for Kindle E-Readers released in 2012 or earlier.
The following Kindle E-Readers are impacted:
- Kindle 1st Generation
- Kindle 2nd Generation
- Kindle DX
- Kindle DX Graphite
- Kindle Keyboard (3rd Generation)
- Kindle 4
- Kindle Touch
- Kindle 5
- Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation

After May 20, 2026, the impacted devices will no longer be able to connect to Amazon Services. Specifically:
- You’ll not be able to purchase, borrow, or download new books on these devices.
- You’ll not be able to register these devices to an Amazon account.
- If you deregister, or factory reset an impacted device, you’ll not be able to reregister it or use the device in any way.
What stays the same?
- You can continue reading books already downloaded on your device, as long as you remain logged in and don’t deregister or reset the device.
- Your Amazon account and Kindle library remain fully accessible on other devices and apps.
- You can transfer personal documents to impacted E-Readers using a USB cable (Send to Kindle option won’t be available).
You have several options to continue accessing your entire Kindle library:
- Free Kindle App: Available for Android, iOS, Mac, and PC at www.amazon.co.jp/kindleapps.
- Kindle for Web: Read on your browser at Kindle Cloud Reader.
- A newer Kindle device: Your Kindle library is accessible on any Kindle device released after 2012.
