Fairy Meadow Public School
Fairy Meadow Demonstration School (FMDS) promotes excellence, success and opportunity for every student. Our approach to education is reflected in the school motto, "Learn to Live." Each day our students are learning the foundations for a successful future. One of many exciting programs at Fairy Meadow Demonstration School, Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL), is underpinned by the core values of Repsect, Responsibility and Safety. These core values compliment our school motto and serve to teach and instil many valuable life-long lessons in our students and families. Fairy Meadow Demonstration School is truely a unique school in New South Wales Public Education and schools in general and offers a wide range of opportunities to our students and their families to excel and succeed. FMDS is a demonstration school, one of only 4 such schools in New South Wales and therefore enjoys a dynamic partnership with the University of Wollongong. Each year hundreds of pre-service teaching students, the next generations of teachers, from the Faculty of Education, become a vital part of our school. Our polite, interested and friendly students and their teachers share exemplary standards and skills in education and the university students are enagaged and excited by highly relevant practical learning experiences and "on the job" training. The university students or "teachers to be" leave our school wanting to return to FMDS as casual or permanent teachers, having left with the best professional learning and fond memories of their time spent in such a vibrant, progressive and positive school. FMDS is only one of a few schools in Wollongong which has its own pre-school on-site where pre-schoolers are able to participate in whole school programs and activities, promoting a smooth transition into Kindergarten. Our school has an on-site child care facility which offers before, after and vacation care. FMDS promotes an inclusive learning environment offering specialised English as a Second Language (ESL) and a special education unit with four support classes for children with special learning, intellectual and physical needs. FMDS is a very diverse, complex and exciting primary school which offers so many life experiences and learning for our wonderful students and their families. In 2016 FMDS has two pre-school classes, both full with 20 children in each class, 13 mainstream classes K-6 and 4 support classes.Currently, approximately 30% of our students come from a language background other than English and approximately 4% are Aboriginal students. The nature of FMDS is therefore a busy and exciting school, catering for a very diverse student population within a wide range of academic abilities, interests and learning, cultural and sporting programs. Other important school programs include Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL), L3 (Language, Learning and Literacy), Chess Club, sport and daily fitness, gala days, special events like Easter Hat Parade, Christmas Concerts, Library Book Fair, Munch & Crunch healthy eating, choir and choral festival, dance groups and Southern Stars. Our school has a strong focus not only on academic achievement but on a wide range of sports, creative and performing arts. At FMDS we value the strong support from our parents, our wider community and our hard working and dedicated P&C. Staff, students and parents are all very proud to be a part of Fairy Meadow Demonstration School. Further information can be found on our Fairy Meadow Demonstration School website.
