Insane NCOER bullets

Writing ETS award for one of my NCOs and I was reading their previous NCOERs and came across this absolute gem:

o rated 10 out of 10 SGTs I currently rate, SGT NAME struggled to perform the duties and tasks required at current rank; incapable of handling menial tasks without direct supervision

o performance is at times above average, but is erratic and undependable; cannot be relied upon to complete any complex assignments

After reading these, I can unequivocally say that their performance has not improved, but damn it they will get a PCS AAM for their long and fruitful career.

I’ll take a medium shake

Too many signatures needed, let’s do a COA instead

Honestly, he deserves a COA but I’m pretty sure my BC would skin me alive if that’s all we gave him (he really likes this Sgt bc of SFRG)

Ahh favoritism. One of the few things that matters in the Army. Besides badge/deployment patch/tab candy & fast run times. Competence is rated far lower unless you're somewhere that matters and if you're not AND hated, it won't matter if you're the most competent soldier/office since Dick Winters at all.

That’s what they told me about one of my shittiest E5s. Told them to write it then.

Instructions unclear, submitted for MSM

The Master Sergeant Medal! He’s been an e5 for so long that he’s a master at being a sergeant!

Ah, a common mistake: you're thinking of the MSTM. The MSM is the Master Sham Medal, for which your rated Soldier is a textbook example.

Hahaha dang that’s not the 10/10 you want.

When I ETSd as an E5 I wrote my own ETS award (Arcom) just like I wrote my own deployment award (Arcom) lol also wrote my 3 SPCs Arcoms for the deployment everyone’s was approved.

At least you are writing them an award! We had some ETS without anything and some that deployed and got nothing not because they were fuck ups but their NCOs sucked SMH NCOs job is to take care of soldiers

Unpopular opinion but I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong about writing your own awards and bullets for evals. After all, who knows what you did better, than yourself? It’s the same concept as having someone write you a LoR and you send it to them and all they do is concur with what you wrote and sign.

Just wrote my own on my last “deployment” and now with my retirement. My guys went overseas for a 7 month deployment, I volunteered to go with them for one last shit and giggle. The CSM made me write an MSM for myself, even though I told him I didn’t do anything. “All E7 and above get them”, I was told. I took over an S Shop because it needed a SNCO, just that. It had a high speed E5, from a California guard unit, running that office like a hot knife through butter. I showed up twice a week to check in on her. I gave her glowing reviews and worked out some schools/TDYs for her to go to when we got back. Now I need to write a retirement award for myself, I just want the orders, wrong answer.

When I ETSed I wrote my own ETS MSM (told to do so by the Corps DCG-M since it was in a high visibility role in the corps HQ) a month before the start of my skill bridge.

Came back expecting it to be downgraded to an Arcom since I’d declined command to start grad school and move on with my life instead of babysit a property book.

Instead they gave me a template staff captain did great work ARCOM because they lost the one I wrote.

Somehow seeing the laziness in messing up a literal completed task for them, aside from handing it to S1, that then was half assedly covered up, confirmed every choice up to that day.

I never bothered to put the oak leaf on for that one on the ASUs.

Sounds like a 25S I know that probably should have never picked up E5 but did. I wonder if this is the same guy lmao. My condolences to you brother. May the award gods bless upon you what you need to succeed in this endeavor.

He’s a 91B so not the same guy. He’s what we call a “profile builder”

Welp. What a mess. Man... 🫠 Sounds like a project and a half right there. It’s always rough on the unit when someone can't pull their weight, but now you’re the one stuck 'polishing the turd' just to ensure he walks out with a PCS award? Best of luck with those bullets, man.. Feel free to drop a DM or 2 if you need to brainstorm some creative fiction for him, yk?

Lol I worked with a guy who was just an awful soldier and NCO.

I basically had to make up bullets for him because he couldn't even help me with it or provide me with a support form

Long story short he got the bullets changed to the most dramatic LinkedIn verbiage I've ever seen in my life.

I’ve written pretty similar. “Requires constant supervision to accomplish assigned tasks to a minimum acceptable standard”, and “Junior soldiers spent significant time proofreading and correcting his work.” It’s not a fun time trying to turn stuff like that into an end of tour award.

Beats the days when PCS/ETS awards weren't a thing unless you were a favorite or had a ton of rank. Hell I didn't even get an ETS award as an officer. Hell besides my deployment I only got awards from other units as an enlisted dude or an officer for doing a good job or whatever. I'd rather some dirt bags slip through the cracks than tons of people go completely unappreciated.

My favorite bullet from another thread like this: “Soldiers will follow if only out of morbid curiosity”

I once wrote for a SOF SSG as the SR: "competent individual, but requires additional development to mature into an adequate leader. Retain at current rank."

Look at it this way... he's getting out so that's good haha.

Edit: You said ETS and then concluded that it is a PCS award. Which is it?

But I’m loosing my terminal ACP/CQ soldier 😔

I actually appreciate reading bullets like this.

Damn, makes me feel less bad about the one I just wrote.

It’s so dumb when some commands force an award for everyone. I was lucky enough to have a command where I presented evidence (just like yours) that the SGT had a “does not meet standard” NCOER that followed an entire book of negative counselings, that my command backed me on him not getting an award. I told them I wasn’t going to write it because he earned that no award.

Yes the AAM is not something you write home about, but it still is an award that should be earned. If you give it to someone who couldn’t even meet the standard, much less exceed it, you’re showing blatant disrespect to all the SPCs who have been doing the right thing.

Make it easier on yourself and just give him a COA. Sounds like the only thing he really did was accomplish being in the army till his RCP date.

That being said, I had to write my own retirement award and gave myself an MSM.
