Divine 9 Sisters: I am honored to be a part of the DC Zion Baptist Church community where Dr. Dorothy Boggs, our 108 year old member is a national treasure. Two days ago, she was honored by NBC for her age and contribution to America. An AKA, she was born in Kentucky in 1917, and who like the Black women of the WWII 6888 Postal Battalion, she embodies the resilience and patriotism of all women who stepped forward during WWII to work in factories and the Department of War to keep our nation moving while our men were fighting abroad. These women changed the culture of “stay at home” American women. They were called “Rosie the Riveters,” and many, like Dr. Boggs were among the 600 plus Black women who helped our country win WWII. Dr. Boggs is a recipient of the prestigious Congressional Gold Medal for her WWII role. She is one of five Black women who worked as a typist in the Department of War during WWII, paving the way for Black women in a segregated society. Zion Baptist Church, where Rev. Dr. Keith Byrd is pastor, is blessed to have the wisdom of Dr. Boggs. Show her some love.
