Thursday was a great day for mom as the Town of Sylva proclaimed January 1st as Sally Mae Campbell Day in recognition of her years of service to her community. Mom was born in Sylva and lived her entire life in town. Mom turned 107 years old November 11th of this year. Mom was presented the Proclamation at her home by the Town of Sylva Mayor Johnny Phillips and Town Manager Paige Dowling. Following the presentation at her home, my sister Judy Covin and I attended the Town of Sylva Board meeting where the Board members officially voted on the Proclamation. The Sylva Herald also re-ran this week a feature article written when mom turned 100. The Sylva Herald article and the Town of Sylva’s Proclamation reference mom’s years of teaching, participation in civic organizations, involvement in her church, and being WCU’s oldest alumni.
