And this basically stands as the main argument against all DRM.
I think Valve is a lot larger and unlikely to meet the same fate, but still gotta wonder what could happen when Gabe eventually dies... Especially if it then went from private company to a publically traded one and was managed by evil wall street types who only care about shareholder profits.
I generally like Steam/Valve but I definitely like GOG's no DRM stance. Too bad there's no such thing as goggifts.com - that would be a really cool sister site to have.

"Fargo announced the founding of Robot Cache, a new digital games storefront for personal computer games expected to go live in Q2 2018. Robot Cache will deliver games via blockchains which can be decrypted or re-encrypted through the service; this will effectively allow players to buy and sell digital games without publishers fearing that the original owner can retain a copy after selling."
It's even crazier that the DRM is some blockchain license...
...which goes away with the company

Would be cool if they started allowing GOG gifts here, they could make it so it doesn't grant CV or something like that

I remember reading once (years ago) that Valve's plan for an eventual Steam shutdown was basically to give a one month warning to everyone along with pushing an update that would allow to run games offline, so basically it's gonna be a matter of downloading everything and backing up the files, but it sadly won't provide any solution for third party DRM. Regardless of that there's games on Steam right now that will run without Steam, it's poorly documented and requires you to dig through the game's files to find the alternative executable but at least they exist sometimes.
I just hope that when the day of Steam's shutdown comes it's not as chaotic as the collapse of Desura, that was a mess.

a matter of downloading everything
That would cause a SSD and HDD shortage of epic proportions. 😁
Just tried to calculate the storage needed for my entire library with SteamCalculator, but it could only pull data for 3% (not even accounting for removed/delisted games) of my collection which ended up being 600GB.

I don't even wanna attempt to calculate how much storage I'd need to back-up all of my games, needless to say I wouldn't be able to do so unless I buy a bunch of HDD's which doesn't seem realistic. So I guess I'd need to pick and chose what I'm willing to save and what I'm fine with losing.
Back when Desure went bankrupt I had to do something similar with the couple of hundred of games I owned there, what I didn't own somewhere else and couldn't get keys for steam or itch.io (thankfully a number of devs offered them during the transition) I had to download and since at that moment backing everything up wasn't realistic I ended up only downloading I think around 30 or 40 games.

As long as the audiobook version of Gabe's heir gets narrated by someone other than Wil Wheaton, I could get on board with that.
Wil seems like a decent enough guy, but I listened to his narration of Red Shirts... and he just reads in the same old bland voice... After robot voices, he's probably my least favorite narrator. Didn't do different voices for different characters or anything.
The fact that he was the only option for the RPO audiobook kinda soured me on it a little bit but at least there's print and movie versions.

I don't get it, the site is still funcitonal and can buy stuff

`*Dear Robot Cacher,
First, thank you sincerely for joining us on this journey and for supporting Robot Cache over the past few years. We launched this platform with a mission to build something innovative for gamers and publishers alike, and while we gave it everything we had, we weren't able to attract the user base and sales traction needed to keep the store running. As a result, we've made the difficult decision to shut down the Robot Cache store.
The store will officially close in 30 days. After that point, the platform will no longer be accessible, and users will no longer be able to play games purchased through Robot Cache, even if they've previously downloaded a full copy. This is due to how our verification system is integrated into the store infrastructure, which will no longer function once we go offline. All purchasing functionality on the store has already been disabled.
As for IRON, any unexpired IRON credits — whether earned, received through promotion, or redeemed from the resale of games — will expire and be removed from your account as of the store shutdown date. For more information, please refer to our IRON Policy.
If you have questions or need support during this transition, please feel free to contact us at support@robotcache.com.
We're incredibly grateful for the community that believed in what we were building. While this chapter is ending, your support has meant a great deal to our entire team.
With thanks,
The Robot Cache Team*`
Probably waited 1 more day after April 1st to announce
