Thank you! They had the nerve to waste 8 months of my time, scam me, steal my work, try to make $250,000 out of it and then threaten to sue me. They could do this to other people if people aren't alert!

The twins hired a NYC firm to send me a cease-and-desist letter that asks me for $250,000 in damages for contributing to their Kickstarter failure. I hired an attorney to reply to their claims.

Actually a lot of students found out about me through this scam and approached me asking me for advice. I haven't turned anyone down so far! I don't know that there's anything to learn from this; they lied to me and took advantage of my generosity, This was the first time this ever happened to me and I'd like to think that anyone out there thinking of pulling off a similar scam will think about it twice after looking at what the outcome would be.

You have no idea. When they showed me that character design that was a blatant pixar ripoff I gave them a 3 or 4 pages critique and warned them of the consequences they could have incurred if they did not make changes to it. Did they end up applying those changes their own way? No, they stole my art and asked a third party artist to produce a painted rendition of my designs.

I agreed to mentor them, I agreed to look over their work and critique it in writing and with paintovers and diagrams. I agreed to give them assignments and critique their assignments. I never agreed to my work becoming their property. While they could have certainly taken my advice and implemented it their own way (which is what a student is supposed to do), they actually took my original art and storyboards and used it in order to make a profit out of it, without my knowledge or permission. Big difference.

Anyone knows where else I could post about this? any magazine that might be interested in covering this?

They were not. At one point they pitched me the idea they were going to pursue for this commercial project for their client and it hurt me to tell them that it made no sense.

All of their previous employees withdrew support from them and they seem to be unable to convince anyone new to work for them given their hard-earned reputation as scammers. The CG industry is very small and with over 100k visits to my blog over the last few months I can only assume the news has been traveling great lenghts.

I previously worked at Pixar and have several contacts at Disney, I suggested they forward this information to their legal team.

They used my artwork to convince other artists of the prestige of the project and to work for them for cheap. They were able to get Pixar, Dreamworks and Sony veterans to work for them for free or for dirt cheap.

Yeah, I already spoke to several lawyers and they all agree that this is a bluff and that the chances that a lawyer in the us will agree to work for them are very slim.
