Reuniting with Randy Bennett, David Patrick set to join ASU coaching staff

An instrumental figure in Randy Bennett's early success at Saint Mary's due to his extension recruiting ties to Australia and elsewhere, David Patrick is joining ASU's new coaching staff.

Former Division I head coach and LSU associate head coach David Patrick will join Randy Bennett's staff as an associate head coach, two people with direct knowledge of the development told Sun Devil Source.

Patrick had two-season stints as head coach at UC Riverside (2018-2020) and Sacramento State (2022-24) before he became LSU's associate head coach. He had buyout that needed to be resolved before he could join Bennett's staff at ASU. That has been accomplished.

Born in Bermuda and raised in Melbourne, Australia, Patrick worked as an assistant coach for Bennett at Saint Mary's in 2006-10. While there, he helped the Gaels land several impact players from Australia, headlined by Patty Mills, who went on to have a 15-year NBA career.

The success of Bennett and Patrick in Australia significantly contributed to Saint Mary's rising in prominence in the West Coast Conference. The Sun Devils are likely to pursue similar tactics with their international recruiting efforts under Patrick.

Patrick will join Rick Croy and Joe Rahon on Bennett's staff.

Croy is the father of 2026 four-star Riverside Polytechnic guard JRob Croy, the No. 124 overall prospect in the class who signed with Saint Mary's before announcing last week he would instead play at ASU.

Rick Croy was the head coach at Cal Baptist for the last 13 seasons, a program in the Western Athletic Conference since 2018, after earlier being a member of the Pacific West Conference as a Division II school. His 2025-26 team was his best at the school, winning the WAC Conference Tournament to earn an NCAA Tournament in a 25-9 (13-5) season.

"We are grateful and energized to step into this next opportunity God has placed before our family," Croy said in a press release by Cal Baptist. "It is the people that make the journey, and we are thankful for every relationship that has shaped our lives."

Rahon was a two-time All-WCC first-team honoree in 2015-16 and 2016-17 who earned the conference's Defensive Player of the Year award for the Gaels under Bennett. He served as an assistant coach for the last four seasons at Saint Mary's, including being promoted to associate head coach before the 2025-26 season.

Thursday report: Physicality meets Dillingham's challenge from practice outset

After lagging behind head coach Kenny Dillingham's desired level of physicality to begin spring ball, the Sun Devils had their most explosive practice on Thursday, as multiple intense team periods turned into brief skirmishes.
