After Delays, Microsoft Recall Inches Closer to Full Launch

After launching on compatible Copilot+ PCs in the beta channel last fall, Recall is now available in the Release Preview Channel, which is typically the last phase of Microsoft’s testing.

Microsoft is getting closer to releasing its controversial Recall feature.

A preview is now available for compatible Copilot+ PCs with the Windows 11 Insider Build in the Release Preview Channel, which is typically the last phase of Microsoft’s testing.

Recall is intended to help Windows users look back at previous PC sessions. It periodically takes screenshots of your computer activity and stores them on-device to help you find files, websites, or data you previously accessed more easily.

The feature was supposed to roll out with Copilot+ PCs in June 2024 but was delayed several times amid concern that Recall acts more like built-in spyware. Microsoft then added some extra layers of security, like data encryption and making Recall opt-in.

It launched in November for beta testers with Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs and for AMD and Intel-powered Copilot+ PCs a month later.

Users can now access the feature and view the screen captures after authenticating their identities via Windows Hello. Screenshots are disabled for sensitive information, such as a user’s password, address, Social Security number, and credit card information.

Thursday’s release also brings a preview of the Click to Do feature, which sees what you’re doing in an app and suggests one-click options. You can tap the Copilot Key and then click anywhere on the screen to get suggestions.
