What Lyon County stories would you like to see this March for Women's History Month?

I remember Catherine Carter when she resided at Emporia Presbyterian Manor. Sweet loving Christian Woman. And yes she ate alot of GARLIC, you knew when she was close by... "that's what kept her from getting sick, she would say eating lots of garlic.

My husband and I visited her many times. She was so interesting to talk to. She would play the piano for us. She told us about her life. She was very kind.

Thank you so much for honoring her, growing up as a child and being her neighbor we would always visit with her and listened to many of her interesting stories, she for sure had a lot of history to tell, She loved playing her piano and haveing us all sing, and she would sing with us we always felt safe with her around, She kept her eyes on everything around us. And for those that no what a Block mother was way back in the days, She was surely that. We knew if we were feeling threatened or sad or anything we could always run to her house for safety. Sure do miss her, She was a Blessing in our life's.

Interesting. When we moved to Emporia in 1960 we rented a house on Garfield St. next to an older house on the corner of 12th and Garfield. There was a sweet older lady (she seemed old to my 7 year old self, anyway) who lived in that house named Mrs. Carter. I wonder if she was a sister or cousin to Catherine's husband? I think her name may have been Mary, but I'm not sure. She always gave my brother and I gum when we'd go over to visit. I don't remember there being a Mr. Carter around. Seems like she would have been the same generation.

She said everyday she was “blessed”.

I had the extreme pleasure of growing up on East St and getting to know Mrs Carter well; growing up my brothers and I had a paper route and every day we would hand deliver her paper and she would always greet us with a hug and a smile

Great history of life well lived! I to remember Ms. Carter, while growing up on 7th East St. my grandma's house Seymia(Meyers)(Roscoe) Williams. I was 12yrs old walking past her house Gma never allowed us leave our block much cause mom at work and I wanted some ice cream from DQ spending my babysitting money. Ms Carter stopped me on my way back so sat on her porch. She asked me oh! you Ms Seymia granddaughter. I said yes. We chatted awhile and I left, by time got back home my Gma knew I left house without asking. So I too know about Block mothers. Many wonderful memories of our elderly on my Gma block and occasionally invited in to sip sweet tea. My mom's family moved to Emporia from TX in 45'. Their father was requested come by Santa Fe RR as chef for then dignitaries of RR . My Aunt Myrna said just in time for her start kindergarten and how she had never seen so much snow. Aunt Billie Jo was-8, my mom Betty-13. Leonard not born yet. Older brother stayed in TX with Grt.Gma Malinda McGinnis Meyers. Both my father Arthur '25 & his sister Francis '27, grandfather '1898 born grew up in Emporia. So much history of Black community here. Some remember, some lost, but will always be in my thoughts and prayers as we forge onward in this lifetime.
