I would start with the works of Guy Gavriel Kay, Terry Pratchett, Lord Dunsany, Tolkien, Patricia McKillip, Robin McKinley, Peter S. Beagle, and Roger Zelazny. Then The Face In The Frost by John Bellairs, Julian May's Pliocene Exile and Metaconcert series. For starters. :}
