As I’m getting ready myself to self-publish my first sci-fi novel, and specifically on Amazon, I wanted to talk with a lawyer first. While it’s not typically necessary, I set up a meeting because I had a few questions that I wanted to ask, and I knew he had already been hired by two other authors.

During the meeting, his assistant asked me if, and I quote, “How did you make your front and back covers? Have you used any tools like Canva for your book’s cover?”

I was stunned by the question. “No, I didn’t. I’ve actually generated it using local AI models, then refiners, and then retouched it with a bunch of other photo editing tools. Why?” I asked. “Canva can’t legally cover you if a lawsuit happens for using someone else’s work”, she told me.

Wait, you’re telling me that Canva, even the premium version, doesn’t actually provide you with a true commercial license?

I started digging, and ironically, I found even more reasons as to why using Canva is, supposedly, a really, really bad idea.
