For the Summer Games, the first athlete representing Venezuela in the sports events competed at the Games of the XIV Olympiad London 1948, taking part in the discipline of track cycling. At the Games of the XV Olympiad Helsinki 1952, Asnoldo Devonish became the first athlete representing Venezuela to win an Olympic medal of any colour, capturing bronze in the men’s athletics triple jump event. At the Games of the XIX Olympiad Mexico City 1968, Francisco Rodríguez became the first athlete representing Venezuela to win an Olympic gold medal, competing in the men’s boxing light-flyweight event. For the Winter Games, the first athlete to represent Venezuela competed at the XVIII Olympic Winter Games Nagano 1998, taking part there in the sport of luge. No athlete representing Venezuela has yet won an Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour.

Venezuela did not take part in the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games. The NOC's last Winter Games appearance was at Sochi 2014.
