For the Summer Games, athletes representing Kosovo first competed at the Games of the XXXI Olympiad Rio de Janeiro 2016, taking part there in the sports or disciplines of athletics, road cycling, judo, shooting and swimming. At the Games of the XXXI Olympiad Rio de Janeiro 2016, Majlinda Kelmendi became the first athlete representing Kosovo to win an Olympic medal of any colour, capturing gold in the women’s judo half-lightweight event. For the Winter Games, one athlete representing Kosovo first competed at the XXIII Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018, taking part in the discipline of alpine skiing. No athlete representing Kosovo has yet won and Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour.

At Beijing 2022, Kosovo was represented by two Alpine skiers. Albin Tahiri, who had become the NOC's first Winter Olympian at PyeongChang 2018, took part in four events in Beijing with a highest finish of 15th in the men's Alpine combined event. Tahiri's appearance in Beijing made him the first athlete to represent Kosovo at more than one edition of the Winter Games. He was joined in Beijing by Kiana Kryeziu, who became the first female athlete to represent Kosovo at the Winter Games when she took part in the women's giant slalom, finishing 49th.
