For the Summer Games, athletes representing Azerbaijan first competed at the Games of the XXVI Olympiad Atlanta 1996, taking part in the sports or disciplines of athletics, boxing, diving, fencing, judo, shooting, swimming, weightlifting and wrestling. At the Games of the XXVI Olympiad Atlanta 1996, Namig Abdullayev became the first athlete representing Azerbaijan to win an Olympic medal of any colour, capturing silver in the men’s wrestling freestyle flyweight event. At the Games of the XXVII Olympiad Sydney 2000, Zemfira Meftakhetdinova became the first athlete representing Azerbaijan to win an Olympic gold medal, competing in the women’s shooting skeet 75 targets event. For the Winter Games, athletes representing Azerbaijan first competed at the XVIII Olympic Winter Games Nagano 1998, taking part in the discipline of figure skating. No athletes representing Azerbaijan has yet won an Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour.

Since 1998, the NOC has only competed in figure skating and Alpine skiing at the Winter Games. At Beijing 2022, the NOC was represented by two figure skaters, Ekaterina Ryabova and Vladimir Litvintsev, who took part in their respective women's and men's single skating events. At age 18 in Beijing, Ryabova became the second-youngest athlete to represent Azerbaijan at a Winter Games. She finished 14th in the women's single event, while Litvintsev finished 18th in the men's single event.
