College will never warn you about these 3 issues when you start your career in Barbering...

1 - Physical Pain
Long days on your feet with no breaks, hunched over a chair doing repetitive movement, causing back strain. It's important to take care of yourself with regular stretching, food breaks and plenty of water. Don't squeeze that person in on your break, you'll grow to despise your job, its not worth the money.. Take the break.

2 - Shit Money to Start
When you leave college and start work, it may take 6 to 12 months depending on your ability to build a regular clientele and the financial strain can be worrying at times. Keep learning, keep watching experienced barbers, offer a high level of customer service and post on socials regularly to build that clientele quicker.

3 - The Availability Trap
You make yourself too available early on, and then feel stuck maintaining it. It's important to manage expectations with your customers and to stick to your schedule. When starting off, I do advise new barbers to work later to build a clientele within convenient hours after work and school etc but as you get busier customers will struggle to find availability and will ask for favours. At first you'll be happy for the extra money and you'll be tempted to squeeze a few more in, but it's important to start as you mean to go on and stay within your advertised appointments because those favours become expected and those customers will stop looking for appointments themselves and will continue to message for favours. Eventually you'll start to hate it, the extra money won't be worth the extra time you lose from your home life.

Yes, of course work hard and put the hours in, but stay within the hours you are happy with or you'll trap yourself and will grow to feel like you are owned by the chair.

I get a lot of messages from people saying they can't style their hair the way they want.

There's 3 reasons why...

1. The hair has to be cut in to the correct shape. If your barber isn't cutting your hair correctly then it will be harder to style.
2. You have to be using the correct product for your hair type, and it has to be the correct product to suit the finish.
Fine Hair - Volumising Powder
Thick straight hair- Texture Paste/ Clay
Curly Hair- Mousse, Salt spray
Longer Hair- salt spray, powder in roots
3. It's always easier to style your hair when clean, adding product to greasy hair doesn't have the same finish.

Always add a bit of hairspray to hold the style for longer.
