Did Europeans kill Native Americans, absolutely, but did they intentionally use diseases to wipe them out like this guy claims, absolutely not. While the spread of Old World diseases devastated indigenous populations in the Americas, the vast majority of these infections were unintentional There are very few documented instances where Europeans deliberately used disease as a weapon. The only real documentation of this practice was in 1763 at the Siege of Fort Pitt, when Sir Jeffery Amherst wrote to Colonel Bouquet stating “Could it not be contrived to send the Smallpox among those Disaffected Tribes of Indians? We must, on this occasion, Use Every Stratagem in our power to Reduce them.” Bouquet responded, “I will try to inoculate with some blankets that may fall in their hands and take care not to get the disease myself.” Though it is unclear whether Bouquet actually carried out this plan, Captain William Trent did write down that “we gave them two Blankets and a Handkerchief out of the Smallpox Hospital. I hope it will have the desired effect.” Though historians generally agree that neither scheme worked.
