For the Summer Games, athletes representing Georgia first competed at the Games of the XXVI Olympiad Atlanta 1996, taking part in the sports of archery, artistic gymnastics, athletics, boxing, diving, fencing, judo, modern pentathlon, rhythmic gymnastics, sailing, shooting, weightlifting and wrestling. At the Games of the XXVI Olympiad Atlanta 1996, Soso Liparteliani became the first athlete representing Georgia to win an Olympic medal of any colour, capturing bronze in the men’s judo half-middleweight event. At the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad Athens 2004, Zarub Zviadauri became the first athlete representing Georgia to win an Olympic gold medal, competing in the men’s judo middleweight event. For the Winter Games, athletes representing Georgia first competed at the XVII Olympic Winter Games Lillehammer 1994, taking part in the sports of luge, alpine skiing, and ski jumping. No athlete representing Georgia has yet won an Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour.

Prior to the 2022 Games, where Georgia competed in Alpine skiing, figure skating and luge, the NOC had never finished inside the top 10 at the Winter Games. In Beijing, the NOC's six figure skaters finished sixth in the team event to record the highest ever finish for Georgia at a Winter Games. Pairs skaters Luka Berulava and Karina Safina also finished ninth in their event. Also in Beijing, women's Alpine skier Nino Tsiklauri took part in her fourth Games, equalling the Georgian record for most Winter Games appearances that was set by men's Alpine skier, Iason Abramashvili, at PyeongChang 2018.
