For the Summer Games, athletes representing Brazil first competed at the Games of the VII Olympiad Antwerp 1920, taking part in the sports or disciplines of diving, rowing, shooting, swimming and water polo. At the Games of the VII Olympiad Antwerp 1920, Afranio Antonio da Costa became the first athlete representing Brazil to win an Olympic medal of any colour, capturing silver in the men’s shooting free pistol 50m event. At the same edition of the Games, Guilherme Paraense became the first athlete representing Brazil to win an Olympic gold medal, competing in the men’s shooting military pistol 30m event. For the Winter Games, athletes representing Brazil first competed at the XVI Olympic Winter Games Albertville 1992, taking part in the discipline of alpine skiing. No athlete representing Brazil has yet won an Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour.

At the 2022 Games, Nicole Rocha Silveira became the first Brazilian athlete to compete in skeleton at a Winter Games and her 13th place finish in the women's individual event was the NOC's best result in Beijing. Bobsleigh competitor Edson Bindilatti and cross-country skier Jaqueline Mourao also made history in Beijing, both taking part in their fifth Winter Games in 2022, which is the most for any athlete representing Brazil. The NOC was also represented in freestyle skiing in Beijing, with 19-year-old Sabrina Cass finishing 26th in women's moguls. Cass was joined in Beijing by two other teenage Olympic debutants for Brazil, cross-country skiers Manex Silva and Eduarda Ribera.
