For the Summer Games, athletes representing Hungary first competed at the Games of the I Olympiad Athens 1896, taking part in the sports or disciplines of artistic gymnastics, athletics, swimming, tennis, weightlifting and wrestling. At the Games of the I Olympiad Athens 1896, Nandor Dani became the first athlete representing Hungary to win an Olympic medal of any colour, capturing silver in the men’s athletics 800m event. At the same Games edition, Alfred Hajos became the first athlete representing Hungary to win an Olympic gold medal, competing in the men’s swimming 100m event. For the Winter Games, athletes representing Hungary first competed at the I Olympic Winter Games Chamonix 1924, taking part in the disciplines of cross country skiing and Nordic combined. At the III Olympic Winter Games Lake Placid 1932, Emilia Rotter and Laszlo Szollas became the first athletes representing Hungary to win an Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour, capturing bronze in the mixed figure skating pairs event. At the XXIII Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018, athletes representing Hungary won a first Olympic Winter Games gold medal, competing in the men’s short-track speed skating 5,000m relay event.

At Beijing 2022, Hungary won its first ever Winter Games gold in an individual event when short track speed skater Liu Shaoang triumphed in the men's 500m event. Shaoang, who also took bronze medals in the men's 1000m and mixed 2000m relay events in Beijing, was part of the triumphant men's 5000m relay team at PyeongChang 2018, making him the first athlete representing Hungary to win more than one Winter Games gold medal, as well as the first athlete representing Hungary to win four Winter Games medals of any colour. Shaoang's brother, Shaolin, was also part of the men's 5000m relay team in 2018, and the mixed 2000m relay team in 2022.
