    Warm water port achieved

    [–][deleted] 32 points33 points  (9 children)

I think Portugal should have got Ceylon. Would ethnic Russians settle Russian India like they did in Central Asia? Would be interesting to see if they because part of the ussr

    [–][deleted] 34 points35 points  (5 children)

These areas are likely to get independence during the Russian Civil war. They are super far away from central Russia, and have a large population, making it impossible to create a Russian majority anywhere in these regions.

So, when the thrown gets shattered, Punjab flies away.

    [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (2 children)

True but it seems too strategically important to lose - Russia always wanting a warm water port for its troops to “wash their boots in the Indian Ocean”. Maybe become a puppet?

    [–]faith_crusader 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Plus Punjab is one of the most fertile region in Asia. 70% of British India's food supply was produced there. It would a second Ukraine for Russians but without snow.

    [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exactly, it would be too valuable for them to lose. Provided Russia actually managed it well (which didn't happen under the Tsarist regime or the Bolshevik/communist one), Russia would be the richest country on earth. Russia would probably expand its influence onto the Horn of Africa and throughout the Indian ocean now it had a port in this part of the world.

    [–]zipstl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Punjab sure but Baluchistan and Afghanistan are sparsely populated.

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unlikely, but Portuguese could get the Rakhine province of Burma/Myanmar. They had quite a strong presence over there in 16th century and many fought as mercenaries (research for Filipe de Nicola e Brito if you’re interested). There’s even a term in Portuguese for the province (Arracão)

    [–]BudgetYak7273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the obsession people have with the USSR being an inevitable occurrence?!?!?!?!

    [–]fernando8904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. The Portuguese by this point lost any presence in Ceylon.

    [–]sapphicSapphire_[S] 95 points96 points  (16 children)

Note: I barely speak any Portuguese, French, Dutch, or Russian so forgive me if I butcher any of the "-izations" of these names

Also yeah, the borders are awful on purpose; what less can you expect from South Asia getting the Africa treatment?

    [–]Kedjens 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Dutchman here, only mistakes i can spot are “and” is und should be en, und is german, and Nederlansch is old spelling, it should be Nederlands instead.

    [–]Anaedrais 16 points17 points  (11 children)

At least reuniting India would be a breeze compared to the hell that would be trying to fix Africa, as from what I know India and other asian countries are typically quite unified overall and less likely to fragment.

    [–]arran-reddit 10 points11 points  (4 children)

People laugh about drawing straight borders, but this is what happens when countries tried to respected cultural groups https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dahala_Khagrabari

    [–]idonotknowtodo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

India is currently at its 5-6 th unity.

Mauryan empire- 322 BCE- 184 BCE

Gupta Empire- 400 AD- 550 AD

Delhi Sultanate (Tughlaq) - 1320 AD- 1355 AD

    Mughal Empire- 1526 AD- 1710AD

    Martha Empire- 1759- 1765 AD

British India- 1858 AD- 1947 AD

    Republic of India- 1947 AD-

    [–]Trainer-Grimm 6 points7 points  (3 children)

"reuniting india" is a bit of an oxymoron, since India doesn't have a history of unity bar hegemonic empires like the Maratha or Britain, and it's like saying "reuniting europe." Too diverse and too much history of conflict.

    [–]pgh1979 5 points6 points  (0 children)

India has had united empires 4-5 times. 300 BC Maurya Empire which beat Alexanders invasion and converted India from Hinduism to Buddhism. Gupta empire around 1000 AD which reconverted India from Buddhism to Hinduism. Delhi Sutantanate around 1200-1400 which got most of India except the South together along with Afghanistan, introduced Islam, Mughal empire around 1500-1600 which took over from Delhi Sultanate, Maratha empire around 1700 which got most of central and Northern India together. British raj was actually pretty disunited as only about 40% of the land area was under direct british rule with 500+ independent kingdoms which had a tributary relationship to the British. Modern India was created between 1947 and 1960 by slowly absorbing sometimes diplomatically sometimes by force of arms these 500 kingdoms.

    [–]idonotknowtodo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is united under Mauryan, Mughal, Delhi Sultanate and Gupta

    [–]idonotknowtodo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mauryan, Gupta, Mughal, Delhi Sultanate, Martha all united India

    [–]arcehole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one would want to reunite India in this timeline. India as a nation would not exist.

    [–]freeturkishboi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

    Looks better tbh

    [–]Mr_Stephan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does anyone have tips on how to make "-izations" of place names? I don't know how to

    [–]obentyga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About the portuguese, I would just advise that a better translation of Maratha would be Marata. If there's no acute accent, you just assume it's on the penultimate syllable (also, that's how the Maratha Empire is translated on Wikipedia)

    [–]mexicandemon2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

    Glorious

    [–]willweeli 3 points4 points  (1 child)

This looks marvelous, what font have you used?

    [–]sapphicSapphire_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    It's Futura!

    [–]Prehistoric Sealion!Seteinlord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess Siam is still lucky to be independent in that alternate timeline.

    [–]RichRaichu5 1 point2 points  (1 child)

So hear me out, I also made a British Bengal some times ago, and yes, that was just guesswork but that exactly looked like your thing. And adding to it, almost every big Bengal I saw looks like this, is there any secret?

    [–]sapphicSapphire_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess it's mostly that region being the region the British colonized, I usually just followed the rivers and all and used mountains as borders which sort of creates that shape

    [–]God_peanut 1 point2 points  (2 children)

How tf did Russia take Afghanistan and Pakistan without getting beat up?

    [–]sapphicSapphire_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Britain has way less leverage over India to keep Russia out, like they did in the Great Game

    [–]pgh1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Pakistan did not exist.

    [–]kacoopper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    'fr*nch india' 🤢🤢🤮

    [–]vsthelegend2006 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

    Awesome

    [–]faith_crusader -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think Punjab would just be called Punjab or Punjabski Krai in Russia and Sindh will be Sindhudesh because that is the name Sindhi seperatists have given to their country.

    [–]Gamermaper -3 points-2 points  (2 children)

    What is that Portuguese border?

    [–]sapphicSapphire_[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Arbitrary and awful, like most colonial partitions

    [–]Gamermaper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Borders as straight lines were only prevalent in the Americas, Australia and Africa for a reason. If you look at a map of the British Raj you won't see any straight borders. Straight borders make no sense in a place like India which is filled with rivers and mountain ranges. During colonial times it was much easier to point at a river as a political boundary than to pull out a whole team of geographers and mathematicians just to keep track of your borders. The majority of straight borders in colonial times were in places where there was little else to base the borders off, such as in a desert or unexplored rainforests.

    [–]Red_Riviera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only real complaint is Russia had no interest in India, so would have probably stopped at Kashmir and given the Sikhs the Mongolia treatment

    [–]OhSoYouWannaPlayHuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder how powerful the Russian Empire would be now that it has direct access to the Indian Ocean

    [–]NeoMemeLord25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Germany cries in corner

    [–]BelgianCommunism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is awesome! the only thing i would change is i would reverse french india and british bengal, since the french were allied to bengal irl

    [–]pgh1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Qing dynasty looks unrealistic. Qing had very little control on Tibet which was basically British and Xinjiang which was overrun with Russians. If Russia is taking enough interest in the area to come all the way to Punjab no way are they leaving Xinjiang and West Tibet. Similarly British if they dont have the Afghanistan rebels to handle will have enough troops to take East Tibet. Dutch never had a presence in Tamil Nadu. I would think Madras stays British

    [–]General_Tripathi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based! I want to live in Russian Indostan

    [–]Alien Time-Travelling Sealion!AdarshTheGreatGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)
