This week we learned — thanks to a Globe editorial — that the City of Boston has denied the Emerald Necklace Conservancy a permit to hold its annual “Party in the Park” fund-raiser, which was supposed to be at Pinebank Promontory in Jamaica Plain.

For 21 years, ladies have lunched in fancy hats for a good cause, raising a cumulative $11.5 million to help care for about 9,000 trees from the Boston Common to Franklin Park. The city explained it could not sign off on a week-long closure of a public park for a private function, and that any previous approval had been given in error.
