For the Summer Games, athletes representing Spain first competed at the Games of the II Olympiad Paris 1900, taking part in the sports or disciplines of athletics, basque pelota, track cycling, equestrian, fencing and rowing. At the Games of the II Olympiad Paris 1900, Francisco Villota and Jose de Amézola became the first athletes representing Spain to win an Olympic medal of any colour, capturing gold in the men’s basque pelota cesta punta event. For the Winter Games, athletes representing Spain first competed at the IV Olympic Winter Games Garmisch-Partenkirchen 1936, taking part in the disciplines of alpine skiing and cross-country skiing. At the XI Olympic Winter Games Sapporo 1972, Francisco Fernández Ochoa became the first athlete representing Spain to win an Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour, capturing gold in the men’s alpine skiing slalom event.

At Beijing 2022, Spain was represented by 14 athletes and won a single medal. Snowboarder Queralt Castellet took silver in the women's halfpipe on her fifth Olympic appearance, making her the third athlete to represent Spain at five editions of the Winter Games.
