For the Summer Games, the first athlete to represent Bulgaria competed at the Games of the I Olympiad Athens 1896, taking part in the discipline of artistic gymnastics. At the Games of the XV Olympiad Helsinki 1952, Boris Georgiev Nikolov became the first athlete representing Bulgaria to win an Olympic medal of any colour, capturing bronze in the men’s boxing middleweight event. At the Games of the XVI Olympiad Melbourne 1956, Nikola Nikolov Stanchev became the first athlete representing Bulgaria to win and Olympic gold medal, competing in the men’s wrestling freestyle middleweight event. For the Winter Games, athletes representing Bulgaria first competed at the IV Olympic Winter Games Garmisch-Partenkirchen 1936, taking part in the disciplines of alpine skiing and cross-country skiing. At the XIII Olympic Winter Games Lake Placid 1980 , Ivan Lebanov became the first athlete representing Bulgaria to win an Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour, capturing bronze in the men’s cross-country skiing 30 kilometres mass start event. At the XVIII Olympic Winter Games Nagano 1998, Ekaterina Dafovska became the first athlete representing Bulgaria to win an Olympic Winter Games gold medal, competing in the women’s biathlon 15 kilometres event.
Following Dafovska's historic triumph, Bulgaria won two bronze and a silver at the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City and then one silver at Turin 2006, but has not returned to a Winter Games podium since. At Beijing 2022, the only athlete to achieve a top-10 finish in Beijing was Alpine skier Albert Popov, who finished the men's slalom event in ninth place at his second Games, having debuted at PyeongChang 2018. The NOC's youngest participant in Beijing was 18-year-old biathlete Lora Hristova, who was the second-youngest athlete from any NOC to compete in biathlon at the 2022 Games. Another Bulgarian teenager in Beijing was figure skater Alexandra Feigin, who finished 23rd in the women's single skating event.
