For the Summer Games, one athlete representing Romania first competed at the Games of the II Olympiad Paris 1900, taking part in the sport of shooting. At the Games of the VIII Olympiad Paris 1924, athletes representing Romania won a first Olympic medal of any colour, capturing bronze in the men’s rugby 15s event. At the Games of the XV Olympiad Helsinki 1952, Iosif Sirbu became the first athlete representing Romania to win an Olympic gold medal, competing in the men’s shooting 50m rifle prone 60 shots event. For the Winter Games, athletes representing Romania first competed at the II Olympic Winter Games St. Moritz 1928, taking part in the sport or discipline of bobsleigh and military patrol. At the X Olympic Winter Games Grenoble 1968, Ion Panţuru and Nicolae Neagoe became the first athletes representing Romania to win an Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour, capturing bronze in the men’s bobsleigh two-man event.

At Beijing 2022, Romania posted one top 10 result - a ninth-place finish in luge mixed team relay thanks to Raluca Stramaturaru, Valentin Cretu, Marian Gitlan and Darius Lucian Serban. The result was an improvement on the 10th-place finish in the same event at PyeongChang 2018, where Stramaturaru and Cretu were also part of the team. Stramaturaru also finished seventh in women's singles at PyeongChang 2018, which remains the NOC's highest finish in any event since Lillehammer 1994, but was unable to finish the same event at Beijing 2022 after crashing. On the bobsleigh track in Beijing, Andreea Grecu finished 12th in women's monobob to post her best result in three Winter Games appearances, while Romania's 4-man team finished 13th to record the NOC's best result in that event since finishing seventh at Sarajevo 1984.
