I learned that the Firefox team is working on a UI refresh, called Nova.
https://itsfoss.com/news/firefox-nova-leak/

Personally, I like it. Nova looks fresh and interesting!
But Nova also introduces way more rounded interface elements (address bar, input fields, tabs, shortcuts ...). Some users simply hate rounded elements, especially rounded tabs. Others love them.

Team "rectangular" 🟪

Team "round" 🟢

So why not introduce a feature to decide for the roundness of the interface elements yourself? The default can be rounded, but users that don't like this are able to change just one setting to make the design more rectangular. And yes, this could probably be changed using a custom CSS stylesheet (userchrome.css), but not every user has the technical skills to make these changes.

Vivaldi already has this setting. You can decide which border radius should be applied to buttons, frames, tabs and other elements.

Dear Firefox team, what scenario do you like the most?

  1. Nova is launched, but people :face_with_open_mouth: keep nagging :weary_face:about the rounded tabs and buttons while it actually is a really nice UX redesign?
  2. Nova is launched, people love it 🧡 and other users tell each other :right_arrow: "hey, if you don't like rounded tabs, just change is one setting that was introduced with Nova!". After the much beloved "AI kill switch", this new setting once again provide choice to Firefox users and puts Firefox on par with Vivaldi in this respect.

I've added a screenshot of the "corner rounding" setting in Vivaldi. Seems like a fairly simple addition to Firefox settings and an opportunity to make the launch of Nova even better :rocket:!

one thing Vivaldi does poorly is that they reduce the rounding even of radio buttons, that's just bad

but overall yep, that's great

Looks good! And agreed +1 to letting users select their preferred roundness.

For me i dont care either way, but i like a modern look. I wish that firefox could brainstorm the UI a bit more so that it is more unique to firefox and less of opera's replica.

The goal is to make it look more like Chrome. I don't mind if it resembles Chrome, but at least the team has worked on implementing native dark mode.

I do. If i wanted to use chrome, i would use chrome. But i don't. Is this being mandated by google "or else no more sweet cash"? because i can't see another reason for this to be happening.

Major design updates are often controversial within the community. That’s why I think it’s a brilliant idea to make the main elements customisable via settings.

As casual users in particular often struggle with changes because they can’t find their way around the new design, this shouldn’t be a hidden add-on but must be accessible in the standard settings!

if anything make it Australis Compact, no idea why it wasn't available in the main channel, but it was the best Firefox ever looked

Yes please. The new UI is hideous - if I wanted chrome, I'd install chrome. I am absolutely sick of the war on information density.

I don't like the Nova redesign at all from the screenshot/mockup that circulated in the media. It looks very "from an AI age for the AI age" and wastes a lot of space between components. I'd love an option to disable it.

Firefox Nova looks very nice, I hope I can start using it soon.

Firefox holds a unique spot in the market right now, being the only browser that hasn't, for lack of a better term, AI-ified it's UI design. While I understand Mozilla's desire to introduce a more modern UI to better compete with more trendy browsers, I also think that it's very important that this change introduce greater customizeability to the UI. Give users an option to use a more compact, more "old fashioned", and more "unified" UI if they prefer.

Personally, I don't like the floaty, circular, panelized layouts that are popular today. While I don't share many user's dislike of padding, I think that the "island" UI is very ugly and would greatly appreciate a way to disable it.
