This applies to everything, for the record. The theme park. The video games. Fanfic. All of it. JKR owns Harry Potter. Singularly. It is HER franchise, full stop. Even if you try and justify whatever fan-created works you like as not giving her money, it still promotes the franchise as an entity

With the HP trailer dropping tomorrow, here's the whole deal: If you watch the show, hell even just the trailer, I will think less of you. I will dislike you. I will think you don't care about trans people. That's it. It's been years. There's no wiggle room. No qualifiers. You care or you don't.

Rowling is a billionaire. She has her money. It isn't going anywhere. Harry Potter as a franchise, however, isn't as fixed. Folks who engage with it SHOULD be shamed. It SHOULD be embarrassing and seen as bigotry to watch the show or go to the theme park. That's where the line needs to be.
That's why seeing product tie-ins annoy me, especially working at a grocery store; the new Butterbeer products not only not interest me, it also makes me think "yep, that's a brand I don't need to spend money on."
Yeah like frankly, she's obscenely rich, I dont really think boycotting HP can ever hope to hurt her financially. To me it's much more about trying to smother it as a cultural force because that gives her the social capital she needs. Which is why I have no patience for the "oh just pirate it" crowd
Oh absolutely, she could never make another dollar as long as she lives and still have a massive war chest to fund transphobia It is the fact that HP remains a popular franchise that is acceptable to engage with that is the real problem and folks who choose to do so, in any form, should be shamed

If you like Harry Potter Kick Motherfucking rocks wit Your transphobic ass
The next motherfucker in my little crochet forums to post a hufflepuff badger is going to get their entire yarn stash shoved up their nose. Proverbially
This might be uncharitable but I can't even get with anything that operates in this aesthetic playground anymore. Wizard schools, as a concept, no longer work for me
I'm still okay with wizard schools because it is a concept that predates Rowling, she didn't invent it and I think there's still stories to be told in that format that work. Now if it is clearly just HP with the serial number scrubbed off yeah I don't give a shit.
Yeah like, I accept that there's an itch to be scratched there and I don't entirely begrudge anyone for still wanting that even if I don't. I do strongly feel that any attempt to capture the "magic" of the series without the problematic bits is just barking up the wrong tree entirely
Especially bc she has said in the past that engaging w her work at all is supporting her ideas. She thinks fans or creations they make of it means they’re on her side. Just drop it! Drop the whole thing!
Yup. All those people that got Hogwarts legacy when it was free on epic directly lead to the sequel gaining enough traction to be released. Engaging with the franchise even for free leads to more being made and more money for bigotry
I've had to explain to people basic IP business SO MANY TIMES when the HP video gsme came out that simply owning the IP allows her to gain wealth from WB and anyone else else who wants to use it. She doesn't hafta be involved in the creation of something for it to enrich her and her bigoted agenda
Yeah she's not getting any of my money. I sold EVERYTHING I had related to that franchise years ago, and haven't looked back. It's a shame more people insist on still supporting that horrible POS.
sold? i threw it in the trash. no sharing of that IP under this roof
If I didn't need the money at the time, I would have literally burned it.
You're good! I just don't always like talking about that period of my life. It...sucked to say the least.
(getting rid of the shit didn't suck though. It was kind of freeing.)
