For the Summer Games, athletes representing Kazakhstan first competed at the Games of the XXVI Olympiad Atlanta 1996, competing in the sports or disciplines of archery, artistic gymnastics, athletics, boxing, canoe sprint, road cycling, track cycling, diving, fencing, judo, modern pentathlon, shooting, swimming, weightlifting and wrestling. At the Games of the XXVI Olympiad Atlanta 1996, Yuriy Melnichenko became the first athlete representing Kazakhstan to win an Olympic medal of any colour, capturing gold in the men’s wrestling Greco-Roman bantamweight event. For the Winter Games, athletes representing Kazakhstan first competed at the XVII Olympic Winter Games Lillehammer 1994, taking part there in the sport or disciplines of alpine skiing, biathlon, cross country skiing, figure skating, freestyle skiing, short track speed skating, ski jumping and speed skating. Vladimir Smirnov became the first athlete representing Kazakhstan to win an Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour, capturing silver in the men’s cross country skiing 10km event. At the same Games edition, Vladimir Smirnov also became the first athlete representing Kazakhstan to win an Olympic Winter Games gold medal, competing in the men’s cross country skiing 50km event.

Kazakhstan had won a single medal at each of the 2010, 2014 and 2018 Games, but was unable to continue the trend at Beijing 2022. Short track speed skater Abzal Azhgaliyev came closest, finishing fourth in the men's 500m event. Azhgaliyev, competing at his third Games, was also part of the NOC's 2000m mixed relay team that finished fifth in Beijing. In freestyle skiing, Dmitriy Reikherd finished eighth in men's moguls in Beijing at his fifth Winter Games, thus equalling the record for Winter Games appearances for Kazakhstan that was previously set by women's cross-country skier Elena Antonova in 2010. Kazakhstan also competed in Nordic combined at a Winter Games for the first time in 2022, with Chingiz Rakparov finishing 41st and 43rd in the men's individual normal hill / 10km and individual large hill / 10km events, respectively. The NOC's youngest participant in Beijing was freestyle skier Anastassiya Gorodko who finished 21st in the women's moguls at age 16.
