Horror retellings/reinterpretations of family-friendly characters or genres are often ripe with contempt and bitterness towards the source of inspiration; that or they're extremely shallow and lacking in any semblance of understanding of the source, being very self-congratulatory as if just "corrupting" an innocent thing is basis enough for horror and intrigue. This doesn't ring shallow or self-congratulatory to me, it has been showing genuine compassion for the suffering of its characters, even as that suffering is intercut with jokes and with reminders that "yeah this is still garfield"

I really want to know whats going on with the lab tech, why they cant seem to remember their ages and what this has to do with this weird disease. Is this about change catching up to them? About characters that until now believed themselves to be real people getting cruelly made aware of their status as static comic strip characters in a fluctuating timeline where they don't age and don't change despite the times around them changing? What's with irma being dead? Was that death the catalyst for reality breaking around these characters and for garfield, the center of that reality, to fall apart at a basic molecular level? LET ME GO BACK TO READING IM SO CURIOUS
