For the Summer Games, athletes representing Slovakia first competed at the Games of the XXVI Olympiad Atlanta 1996, taking part there in the sports or disciplines of artistic gymnastics, athletics, boxing, canoe slalom, canoe sprint, mountain bike cycling, road cycling, track cycling, judo, rowing, sailing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, tennis, weightlifting and wrestling. At the Games of the XXVI Olympiad Atlanta 1996, Jozef Gönci became the first athlete representing Slovakia to win an Olympic medal of any colour, capturing bronze in the men’s shooting 50m rifle prone 60 shots event. At the same Games edition, Michal Martikan became the first athlete representing Slovakia to win an Olympic gold medal, competing in the men’s canoe slalom C-1 singles event. For the Winter Games, athletes representing Slovakia first competed at the XVII Olympic Winter Games Lillehammer 1994, taking part in the sports or disciplines of alpine skiing, biathlon, cross country skiing, ice hockey, luge, Nordic combined and ski jumping. At the XX Olympic Winter Games Turin 2006, Radoslav Zidek became the first athlete representing Slovakia to win an Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour, capturing silver medal in the men’s snowboard cross event. At the XXI Olympic Winter Games Vancouver 2010, Anastasiya Kuzmina became the first athlete representing Slovakia to win an Olympic Winter Games gold medal, competing in the women’s biathlon 7.4km sprint event.
At Beijing 2022, Slovakia won two medals. Competing at her third Winter Games, Petra Vlhova became the first athlete representing Slovakia to win an Alpine skiing medal at the Winter Games when she won gold in the women's slalom event. Slovakia's second medal in Beijing was also historic - the men's ice hockey team defeated Sweden 4-0 in the bronze medal match to claim Slovakia's first ever Olympic ice hockey medal.
